📣 ON OCTOBER 6!

A special feature of the Annual Mary Ann Shadd Cary Lecture is the students!

Three @jschool_cu students have been hired and trained to be co-moderators for the discussion following the lecture by @edenfineday, publisher of @indiginews

They will meet with Eden ahead of her lecture, craft questions and lead the conversation with her on stage.

Meet the students 👇

🎤 Co-moderator Marissa Meilleur @marissa.516 is a fourth-year journalism and political science student at Carleton University and she is Tlingit of Kwanlin Dün First Nation. She has worked as a reporter for CBC Yukon and her bylines have appeared in the Charlatan, the Yukon Magazine, CBC Ottawa and Capital Current.

🎤 Co-moderator Lazourd Alnashed @Lazourd_vo is a fourth-year journalism student with a minor in business. She is passionate about storytelling in all its forms and interested in community building, advocacy, and languages.

🎤 Co-moderator Madison Eldridge @madison_eldridge14 is completing her master’s in journalism. She is passionate about working with communities and exploring creative storytelling.

📋 Sarah J. Harb @ssaarahjj was one of last year’s co-moderators and returns this year as the night’s event coordinator. She is a Master of Journalism student whose work explores diaspora and media misrepresentation.

Eden Fineday is a nêhiyaw (Cree) journalist from Sweetgrass First Nation in Treaty 6 territory and the publisher of IndigiNews. She is the CEO and co-founder of tâpwêwin and co-founder of the Indigenous Media Association of Canada. She is passionate about supporting Indigenous storytellers and making space for stories that reflect lived experience and uphold Indigenous worldviews.

When @jschool_cu graduate @byheathergd took her young sons on a 29-country journey around the world, she wanted to teach them that the world was bigger than their home city.🌍✈️

More than a decade later, that trip is bringing much-needed representation to children’s television. 📺

Her family’s journey inspired “Globe Bros,” an animated series launching in 2027 on @tvokids and three other Canadian networks.

The show follows two brothers exploring global cultures, solving problems and highlighting the generosity of strangers around the world.❤️🗺️

“There’s not a lot of animation that features a Black family and the two boys in this show are at the helm.”
