SHOCKING | Supreme Court lawyer J Sai Deepak slams the Raj, says the 1770 famine drove Bengal to arms as the East India Company's revenue WENT UP while a third of the province starved.

"So much for British fairness and equity and justice and fair play," he says, in a conversation with Vijay Deverakonda and K Annamalai for the film Ranabaali.

He also says 1857 was not India's first war of independence. The Sanyasi rebellion in Bengal came first, and Bankim Chandra's Anandamath, the novel that gave us Vande Mataram, is set in it.

The Company collected more revenue in the famine year than in the year before it. Ten million dead, and the ledger still went up.

With the truly versatile Shri @shankar.mahadevan and Team Malgudi last evening at the launch of yet another branch of his restaurant Malgudi in Rajouri Garden, Delhi. Loved the food (the ghee podi thatte idli was the star dish!), ambience and music! But above all the warmth and zest of Shankar ji and his family was the gun powder on the thatte idli!
