I am proud to share these pictures with you. By chance I found this beautiful and very rare jewel beetle (Dicerca berolinensis). There have only been a few finds in Germany in recent years. Most of the specimens were dead. Not this one! You can find a video of it in my Insta reels. Even the regional newspaper reported on the discovery and my photographs.

Testing my powerful LED tunnel light with switching box

With this self-developed electronic device I control the camera shutter and LED light trigger sequence. Now I‘m able to run the LED tunnel lights at 100% power without overheating. That is helpful to get high magnification focus stacking sequences, that need a lot of images because of a shallow depth of field.

Wolfsmilchschwärmer-Raupe
Hawk moth caterpillar

🇩🇪 Deutsch (see English below)

🇬🇧 English
One of the encounters I was especially happy about during my macro tour: the caterpillar of the Spurge Hawkmoth (Hyles euphorbiae).
Its striking colours are a clear warning to potential predators – and for good reason. The caterpillar feeds on spurge plants and takes up their toxic compounds, making it an unattractive meal for many predators.
The impressive “spike” at the rear, however, is pure deception. It may look dangerous, but it is not a venomous stinger and is only used for visual deterrence.
The Spurge Hawkmoth is currently considered threatened in Germany, with its population having declined significantly over the long term. So encountering three of these caterpillars in the wild was a particularly special moment.

Spider Sunday

🇬🇧 English
Spiders aren’t everyone’s favourite subject. I haven’t specialised in photographing spiders either, but the more closely I look at them, the more fascinating I find them as macro subjects.
This series shows several native German species, including  crab spiders, a Wasp spider with prey, Philodromus margaritatus, the very rare Eresus kollari and a little jumping spider. They may look very different, but together they are a small glimpse of the remarkable diversity of spiders living around us.
Most native spiders are completely harmless to us. They are generally not aggressive, and they aren’t even capable of penetrating human skin. Taking a closer look can sometimes turn fear or disgust into curiosity – and that’s one of the things I enjoy about macro photography.

Spinnen-Sonntag 🕷️

🇩🇪 Deutsch

New lens!

I discovered a small and rather strange lens on eBay, and since I was in the mood for a new challenge, I spontaneously bought it.

My new little photography buddy helped me with the testing. 😀🪲
The new lens is a bit temperamental, and getting good results with manual focusing and its 15mm focal length is quite challenging 😡. But when you get it right, you’re rewarded with an extraordinary perspective.
I still need to work on the lighting. With such a very short minimum focusing distance, you always have to come up with something a little creative.

🇬🇧 English version

Taking pictures of sound waves

These images were inspired by musician Nigel Stanford. When I first saw his incredible music video Cymatics, I had an idea: What if I could make sound waves visible through photography?

I spent a long time thinking about how I could turn that idea into reality before building my first experimental setup. A small speaker, a very, very old frequency generator and a few LEDs were all I needed for the first attempts.
Creating these images is surprisingly challenging. Finding the right frequency, the perfect lighting and the correct volume to produce a stable standing wave in a liquid medium — and then capturing it at exactly the right moment and with the right exposure — requires a lot of experimentation, patience and sometimes a little luck.

No AI. No artificial generation. Just real photography.
For me, that is the real challenge: creating these abstract artworks entirely through photography, using light, sound, water and precise timing.
I’ll be working on this project again soon, trying to further refine the technique and push the results even further.
Nigel Stanford has been one of my favorite musicians ever since. I hope that one day he will come across these images and the story behind them.
So, if anyone happens to know him personally… please let him know. 😊

Schallwellen fotografieren

🇬🇧 What happens after the shutter stops?

This focus-stacked macro image was created from 115 individual photographs.
First, I process the images in Adobe Lightroom — no AI editing, no heavy retouching. Just careful adjustments and a little sharpening.
Then Helicon Focus, a special software, analyzes all 115 images and combines the sharpest parts into one photograph with incredible depth of field.
Finally, a few subtle finishing touches in Photoshop, and the image is ready for Instagram.

And then it’s ready to be shared — with insect enthusiasts, scientists, macro photographers, students, biologists, and anyone else who is fascinated by these incredible creatures and the technology behind capturing them.

Would you like to see more of the process behind my macro images?
