“Treat Yourself like a precious object will make you strong.” - Julia Cameron I crisply remember the piercing sensation when I first read these words on the pages of The Artist Way by Julia Cameron. It's that feeling of truth that resounds in your chest, even before your mental synapses process the information. I instantly realized how hard I have been on myself most of my life. Nothing I did was ever good enough. I saw myself as weak willed, so to compensate, I had to be tough on myself. I used the drill sergeant mentality towards myself as a strategy to get myself into action In addition to the drill sergeant part of me, There was and still is a very strong rebellious part of me. The part of me that when Im told I have to do something, I'm like, “Oh Yeah?” The part of me that loves testing limits, Tip toeing into forbidden territory, And getting a weird pleasure from breaking the rules, even when it hurts me! I now realize a big part of this rebelliousness is basically a way of me getting back at my dad for bullying me. I say fuck you to life and in doing so , I am getting back at my dad proving to all that I am in charge. Crazy right? Well when I read the quote from the artist way, It created a small crack in my drill sergeant persoana. I instantly realized, maybe this is not the best way to go about things. What if I did the opposite; being soft and gentle with myself, talking positively to myself? The Artist Way goes into talking about how we all have a 5 year old child inside of ourselves, a part of our psyche that never grew up and loves to have fun, get lost in the present moment, and does not like rules. It's a beautiful part of ourselves, and she/he many times may be neglected by us as we grow older and is also keenly aware of our inner self talk. It is vital to cultivate a compassionate relationship with that inner child, to talk to ourselves in a loving , nurturing way and also act in a way that is aligned with that self love. If you wouldn't say it to a 5 year old, then you probably shouldn't say it to yourself. Rest of post in comments by @jsolibri
