How do you capture an entire year of life in a carousel of photos? Not sure you can, but here’s a bunch of pictures that make me smile when I reflect on the last 365 days!

Touring is … crazy? A drastic lifestyle change that one cannot anticipate the reality of until you’re living it. From spending so much time alone & reflecting on how to be a better version of myself, to letting my insecurities flair up & becoming a worse version of myself. Rinse & repeat. It feels like I’ve lived 7 lives in the last year.

Then there’s the part where you do 8 shows/week with only 2 weeks off/year. The trust in your body’s capabilities growing stronger…until your ankle tweaks onstage and you deal with discomfort everyday for months while you strengthen, trying to regain that trust that your body is capable & strong.

The mental gymnastics I’ve experienced could win me Olympic gold…but then you look around at the beautiful community you’re surrounded by (and often take for granted). The most dedicated cast/crew/company I’ve ever been apart of. People who SHOW UP to work & put their entire being into it, day after day. I’m constantly reminded that I’m living my dream, and while it comes with many difficulties, it has also given me SO MUCH - stability, adventure and confidence to say the least.

I hope to squeeze as much growth I’ve felt in the last 365 into every year to come. What a gift to learn, to be flawed, to try to be better, and to spread joy across a country in dire need.

Beauty and the Beast
30th Anniversary North American Tour

Story time!
In the summer of 2006, I saw my first Broadway show, Beauty and the Beast, at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. That night solidified I wanted to spend my life in the theatre.

While I wasn’t cast as Chip in 4th grade or Lefou in 7th grade, I had two opportunities to play Lumiere in high school - my first lead role!

If only 11 year old Spence knew he’d one day bring this show across America with the SAME creative team that crafted the original masterpiece he witnessed in 2006…

This full circle moment is not lost on me.
I am so unbelievably grateful, but most importantly…

It has taken me a while to process the extreme joy & absolute soul fulfilling experience that was CATS.

From growing up, watching the 1998 stage film *constantly* (& seeing every tour that came through town), to choreographing combos with my sister & dressing up as Tugger for halloween - this has always been my dream. I had honestly forgotten that … until I found myself standing center stage, in a unitard, screlting a D6 (scroll to slide 10 for a sneaky peek).

I couldn’t have dreamt up a better reality for this show. Under the direction of @baayork, who I have dreamt of working with since I did ACL in community theatre at 16!!! With my SIS @david.grin as associate, who I’ve been auditioning with in nyc for over 6 years! AND to top it all off, learning OG Gillian Lynne choreography from THE @jacobbrentstagram who has prepped me for the jellicle ball since 1998?!?! I mean … there really are no words, just tears of absolute joy.

This cast was assembled of absolute LOVES with soooo much heart - we had each other’s backs (& tails), always. I have never felt so connected & present onstage with a group of artists/dancers/pussies.

@cityspringstheatre is a very special place. They take care of their people & they present MAGICAL theatre to a community of people who CELEBRATE the arts. I am still on cloud 9 from this journey. I will hold it close to my heart until the day I head to the Heavyside Layer. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now and forever, bitches!! taken in City Springs Theatre Company by @jspencerdean

Really missing the grind of NYC while on tour. Not the depressing part of the grind. The part where you’re constantly in rooms with your best friends holding each other to the highest of standards & inspiring each other to push past your limits & keep doing the work. Then going out for martinis and ending up at Taco Bell at 1am stumbling down 8th Avenue, laughing so hard that you nearly throw up. That’s my grind.

So here’s a video of me dancing some hot jazz choreographed by the one and only @alexandriavanparis. In 2024, @rachelgeorgea @laurenmarymoore @emckelly @courtney.echols, Alex and I did a little dance reel refresh project together & it was such a deeply fulfilling few weeks creating with some stellar ladies. Proud of how far we’ve come in two years and can’t wait to see what’s next for that lovely crew 💕💕💕

2025 - 1 Second Everyday

Wowowow! What a year. Over 6 months away on tour! Unbelievably surreal. I miss NYC so much, but truly feel such an abundance of gratitude to be doing what I love every day, even on the hard ones!!

Can’t wait to see what the next year brings! If you’re apart of my journey, BIG THANKS for being here. Life with y’all is truly unreal & I can’t believe I’m surrounded by the most incredible people I get to call family! Wee!!! LOVE Y’ALL!!!! by @jspencerdean

This year really threw some twists & turns that I didn’t like, but this video diary reminds me that there’s SO much joy in my day to day life! I’m surrounded by the most legendary humans with the greatest hearts.

EXIT LEWIS! We had magic to do and we DID IT! Wow, from the second I threw that chair (#choices) in the callback, making the whole creative team laugh, I knew these people could handle my freak. Not only did they handle(aka deal with) it, but they created a space to play like I’ve never experienced.

#SusannaGellert, @nycfelicity, @larrypressgrove - thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for putting up with me. I’ve never been apart of such a queer, unique group and it was healing and inspiring. I didn’t realize what a treat getting to do a 9 show week was until we were starting Magic To Do for the final time. “It never was there. It always was here.”

@tomiasrobinson @rixeyterry @aliamunsch Thanks for holding me up, listening to me vent, making me laaaaaugh, and loving me. What a quirky adventure we had in our little cabin in the woods. Can’t wait for more movie nights in the city 💕

2023 - 1 Second Everyday

The greatest year of my life. Why? I did CATS. No, but really … I have never laughed harder, loved more deeply, or made better memories than I did this year. If you have it in you, this 6 minutes of pure joy and chaos absolutely captures what every single moment of my life feels like. I love making these video diaries to look back. Each second unlocks a day’s worth of memories & reminds me I am surrounded by the greatest people on this planet.
