Jonathan Thomas is serving as both a performer and the music director for this year’s Holiday Lights, helping to shape the sound and spirit of the evening. He’s been part of the Mid City Civic Theatre conversation since day one, and his vision has played a meaningful role in bringing this fundraiser to life. We asked him a few questions to help you get to know him:

First play or musical you ever saw or performed in?
My mom had the Into the Woods original Broadway cast performance on DVD, and I remember watching it as a child.

When did you know you wanted to be on stage?
My best friend, Alice Way, encouraged me to audition for Romeo and Juliet our senior year of high school. I already loved to sing, so once I caught the theatre bug, I was all in to perform in as many musicals as I could get my hands on.

Favorite part of performing?
Sitzprobe (the first rehearsal the actors have with the musicians.) There’s something so electric about singing with the full support of the band after rehearsing with just a piano. It makes the show feel like it’s coming alive.

What does community theatre mean to you?
Community theatre helps local artists hone their craft and express their creativity, but it also teaches responsibility, collaboration, and communication. You become so plugged into the community. You meet and work with people you might never have crossed paths with otherwise.

What excites you most about being part of MCCT’s first fundraising event?
The chance to support a burgeoning theatre startup in the Capitol Area. Baton Rouge needs the arts.

Mid City in one word:
Eccentric

Favorite holiday movie (or musical/play):
A Christmas Story. It’s a tradition to have it playing all Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. And the musical version has one of the best songs, ‘You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out!’

Meet Jonathan Thomas, making his Sullivan Theater debut as the lovable Will in Oklahoma!

A trained vocalist in both classical and musical theatre, Jonathan has spent the past decade lighting up Louisiana stages. His favorite roles include Dr. Pomatter in Waitress (TBR), Monty Navarro in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder (TBR), Patrick Star in The SpongeBob Musical (Rivertown Theaters), Frank-n-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show (TBR), Jesus in Godspell (MTC @ LSU), and Georg in Spring Awakening (TBR).
