Aim for the Car
When every option hurts, choose the damage you can survive.

The aspens above Gold Hill had turned. Whole hillsides lit up gold, the kind of fall afternoon when everyone on the road is looking at the trees instead of the road.

Last Sunday afternoon, I was descending Sunshine Canyon on one of the dirt sections, about eight and a half miles up from town. I've ridden that road maybe 1000 times over the last 45 years. I know where the washboard starts and ends, where the gravel piles up on the inside of corners, where the road opens up wide and where it pinches. And I know the broad corner where the shoulder falls away to nothing a couple miles from the top. Cyclists have gone off that edge and not come back. One did just a few weeks ago.

Ahead of me, a car was rolling slowly. An elderly couple, taking in the color. I slowed, swung out wide to the left, gave them plenty of room, and started to pass.

Then they turned left, into a pullout. Into me...
