I almost didn’t run this audit..

Everything looked fine. Numbers were fine. Why go looking for trouble.
But I’ve learned the hard way that “looks fine” and “is fine” are two very different things. So I had my own live trading code torn apart the way a real risk desk would do it. Not asking if it makes money. Asking where it actually breaks.

It found three things I genuinely didn’t want to find. My live system was quietly reading slightly different data than the version I’d actually tested and proven. Small gap on paper. Big enough that I could no longer honestly say the live numbers and the tested numbers meant the same thing.

I had a safety limit sitting in my settings that looked airtight. Never actually connected to anything. On a truly bad day, it would have done nothing at all.
And somewhere in there was a rare failure that could let a trade through with zero risk check standing behind it. Rare. Still real.

None of this showed up watching the equity curve climb. It only shows up when you go looking for the crack, not admiring the wall.

Fixed all three. Tested every fix properly this time, not just glanced at it and moved on.

This is the part nobody posts about. Not the win. The quiet thing sitting underneath it, waiting for a bad day to find it first. If you’re running anything live right now, automated or not, ask yourself what I just asked myself.

Not “is this working.”

“What happens the day it isn’t.”

The most dangerous number in trading is the one everybody chases.

Win rate.

I know traders with 80% win rates who are slowly going broke.

I know systems with 40% win rates that quietly compound wealth.

Sounds impossible? Watch this.

Trader A wins 80% of the time. Each win makes $1. Each loss costs $10.

Do the math: (0.80 × $1) − (0.20 × $10) = −$1.20 per trade.

He’s right 8 times out of 10 and every trade he takes moves him closer to zero. He just doesn’t feel it yet, because winning feels like progress.

Trader B wins only 35% of the time. Each win makes $5. Each loss costs $1.

(0.35 × $5) − (0.65 × $1) = +$1.10 per trade.

He’s wrong most days. Frustrated most weeks. And getting steadily wealthier.

The number that separates them is called ‘EXPECTANCY’.. what you make or lose per trade, on average, after everything.

Expectancy = (Win rate × Avg win) − (Loss rate × Avg loss)

It’s the only number that answers the only question that matters: does this system actually make money?

My live gold system wins just 45.6% of its trades. More losses than wins. But the winners run big. The best single trade returned over 8 times its risk, while every loser is capped small.

Expectancy: +0.363R. For every unit risked, it returns 36% on average. Validated across 4 straight years.

I don’t need to be right most of the time. I need the math to be right all of the time.

That’s the shift.. from chasing wins to engineering outcomes.

The silent killer of trading backtests.

I spent weeks building a backtesting engine for my automated gold trading system.
The results looked incredible.
+0.185R expectancy across 8 instruments.

Profitable every single year. Everything worked.

Then I found a bug.

My backtest was accidentally reading the future. When my system checked the higher timeframe trend filter, it was using the close price of a candle that hadn’t finished forming yet. In live trading, that price wouldn’t exist yet, you can’t see the future close of a candle that’s still being drawn. But in my backtest, it did.

This is called look-ahead bias.
It is the single most common reason retail trading systems look incredible in backtest and then fail the moment they go live.

And here’s the honest part.. once I found it, I didn’t patch around it. I rebuilt the entire backtesting engine to be look-ahead-free.

The results after the fix:
→ Portfolio expectancy collapsed from +0.185R to +0.053R

→ 7 of 8 instruments lost their edge completely

→ Only gold (XAUUSD) survived with genuine statistical edge

Most traders would have deployed the original system.
Most traders would have wondered for months why live results never matched the backtest. I found the bug before it cost a single dollar of real money.

That single bug fix is the difference between a system you can trust with real capital and a system that quietly bleeds you while looking profitable on paper.

The lesson:
A backtest that looks too good usually has a flaw hiding in it. Test everything.

Trust nothing until it survives scrutiny.

Verify before you ever deploy.

This is what rigorous systematic research actually looks like. Not glamorous. Not exciting in the moment. But it’s the only thing that separates a real edge from an illusion.

I've been trading for 4+ years.

For most of that time, I was doing what everyone else does.. reading charts, taking manual setups, and hoping the next trade would be the one that changed everything. Then I started asking a different question.

What if, instead of hoping, I could PROVE statistically, rigorously, and honestly whether a trading strategy actually has an edge before risking a single dollar?

That question changed everything.

Over the last several months, I've been building automated trading systems the way institutional quant desks build them:

→ Backtested with zero look-ahead bias

→ Validated on out-of-sample data

→ Stress-tested across multiple market regimes

→ Running live on funded accounts right now

Here's what that process produced:

System 1 - Guardian X12

Gold trend-following system. H1 timeframe. Fully automated.

+0.363R expectancy. PF 1.66. Positive every single year from 2022-2025.

Currently live on a funded account.

System 2 - Guardian v8mr

EURCHF mean reversion. Asia session only. Fully automated.

+0.232R expectancy. PF 1.45. 4 years validated.

Correlation with X12: −0.04 (genuinely uncorrelated).

Currently on forward demo validation.

Two engines. Two uncorrelated edges. One built for trending markets. One built for ranging markets.

I'm now documenting this entire journey publicly.

Not signals.

Not lifestyle.

Not hype.

Real research. Real systems. Real results.. including the failures. Because the failures have taught me more than the wins ever did.
