i had the privilege of interviewing the legendary @slavamogutin for @thecoldmagazine. slava is an iconic queer photographer, writer and journalist — and also became the first russian granted asylum in america for persecution on the basis of homosexuality after the regime charged him with “malicious hooliganism with exceptional cynicism and extreme insolence” in 1995, when he was just 21. slava’s subjects include friends, lovers, drag queens and p*rn stars, inspired by the queer canon of the new york city (goldin, hujar, wojnarowicz) where he sought refuge and refracted through a youth spent in siberia’s hypermasculine confines and moscow’s woozy nineties lgbtq+ underground. he tells me about what he has learnt from photographing the human body, the thin separation between p*rn and art, and how it feels to watch both the usa and russia curdle further into homophobic authoritarianism. his retrospective exhibition, “analog human studies: 25 years of photography by slava mogutin”, shows at san francisco’s bob mizer foundation (@bobmizer) from april 2nd until june 13th. images 1-2, 4-6 are from the exhibition; images 8-9 are personal favs with @katya_zamo, first featured in gayletter; 10 is slava having his chest shaved by the equally iconic bruce la bruce in man about town winter/spring 2016/17; and 11 is slava walking @hoodbyair fw16 by @jude_j0nes2002
