MEET THE WICKED PRODUCTION SOUND & MUSIC TEAM:

3rd Assistant Sound's Harry King and Emily Compton

The UK film industry benefits greatly from strong trainee schemes that nurture emerging talent that I support on narrative films. However, musicals like Wicked pose unique challenges for the sound department, requiring a high level of technical skill and precision in all roles. To meet these demands, we introduced a new role: the 3rd Assistant Sound.

This position bridges the gap between trainee and the highly skilled & experienced 2nd AS role. It’s designed for individuals with prior on-set experience who aren’t yet ready for the demanding responsibilities of a 2nd AS but can confidently handle technical tasks without supervision. A 3rd AS must have the expertise to set up systems like a “Voice of God” or a music PA independently—tasks critical to a musical production’s success.

The huge demand of musicals for the sound dept leaves little room for extensive training during production. Instead, we rely on 3rd AS’s who come prepared with a foundation in film sound and a commitment to their craft. I’ve found the UK’s National Film and Television School (NFTS) to be an excellent source for this role. Their graduates consistently demonstrate both technical proficiency and a passion for a career in sound.

On Wicked, we were fortunate to work with two fantastic 3rd AS’s: Harry King @harryking20 and Emily Compton @emilycomptonsound who supported our Wicked sound & music department during separate blocks. Both brought an impressive skill set and professionalism, reflecting the high standards of the NFTS. Their ability to contribute meaningfully to such a complex production highlights their bright futures in the industry.

Harry and Emily are shining examples of the NFTS sound course and a credit to their tutors PSM Mervyn Gerard & PSM Judi Lee Headman @judijlee . Thank you for your dedication and exceptional work—you’ve set the bar high for the next generation of UK film sound professionals
