Visiting Judith Eisler’s studio

Judith Eisler’s (b. 1962, Newark, United States) subjects are second-hand. Rather than painting from real life, she paints images taken from film stills that are composed by a director or cinematographer. Their apparent spontaneity is thus artfully constructed, story-boarded, rehearsed, selected from multiple takes and perfected in the editing room. The artist sifts through films, viewing countless frames to find ones that arrest her attention for different reasons. For the ‘Lebt und arbeitet in Wien’ exhibition, Eisler has produced three new paintings. ‘Brooklyn Bridge’ (2026) quotes from the 1983 film ‘Variety’, ‘Gunther and Harry 2’ (2026) from the 1970 film ‘Götter der Pest’ and finally, ‘Malina’ (2026) is taken from a 1991 film adaptation of Ingeborg Bachmann’s novel. The scenes prompt questions about what the subjects or we are looking at.

Judith Eislers (geb. 1962 Newark, USA) Motive stammen aus zweiter Hand. Anstatt nach dem Leben zu malen, entspringen ihre Sujets Filmstills, die von Regisseur*innen oder Kameramännern*frauen komponiert wurden. Ihre vermeintliche Spontaneität beruht auf einem Storyboard und ist damit kunstvoll konstruiert, wurde geprobt, aus verschiedenen Fassungen ausgewählt und während des Editierens perfektioniert. Die Künstlerin durchforstet Filme und betrachtet unzählige Einzelbilder, auf der Suche nach einem, das aus unterschiedlichen Gründen ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht. Für die Ausstellung „Lebt und arbeitet in Wien“ hat Eisler drei neue Bilder geschaffen. „Brooklyn Bridge“ (2026) zitiert den Film „Variety“ (1983), „Gunther and Harry 2“ (2026) stammt aus dem Film „Götter der Pest“ (1970) und „Malina“ (2026) hat sie der gleichnamigen Verfilmung aus dem Jahr 1991 von Ingeborg Bachmanns Roman entnommen. Auf unterschiedliche Arten fesseln die Szenen unsere Aufmerksamkeit und werfen Fragen danach auf, was wir oder die Dargestellten anschauen.

This summer, Charim presents works by three gallery artists, Judith Eisler, Scott Clifford Evans, and Lazar Lyutakov, currently featured in the exhibition Lebt und arbeitet in Wien: Contemporary Art from Vienna at Kunsthalle Wien. Bringing together fifty-six artists living and working in the city, Lebt und arbeitet in Wien offers a broad survey of Vienna’s dynamic, critically engaged contemporary art scene.

Judith Eisler (1962, Newark, USA) paints images drawn from cinema, and through her compositions, fleeting frames become charged spaces where narrative construction and painterly perception intersect.

Scott Clifford Evans (1979, Salt Lake City, USA) draws on the visual language of popular cinema and television, engaging genres such as horror, thriller, drama, and exploitation film. Developed through collaborative and process-oriented methods, his work frequently employs improvisation and collective participation, blurring the boundaries between production and performance.

Lazar Lyutakov (1977, Shabla, Bulgaria) investigates the structures and hierarchies that shape contemporary culture, focusing on the relationship between everyday objects, systems of consumption, and global production networks.

This summer, Charim presents work by three artists currently featured in the exhibition “Lebt und arbeitet in Wien: Contemporary Art from Vienna” at Kunsthalle Wien. Bringing together fifty-six artists living and working in the city, “Lebt und arbeitet in Wien” offers a broad survey of Vienna’s dynamic, experiential and critically engaged contemporary art scene. Kunsthalle Wien presents the most extensive survey of the Viennese contemporary art scene organised by the institution in over a decade. For six months, across all of its spaces in the Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz, “Lebt und arbeitet in Wien: Contemporary Art from Vienna“ will bring together over 130 artworks by 56 artists who live and work in Vienna, including painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, photography, performance, sound, film and video. Accompanied by a public programme of talks, performances and events, it places emphasis on the city as a dynamic space of production where art is shaped by a critical approach to the forces of conservatism and a sense of its own agency.

Initially organised by Kunsthalle Wien in 2000, the fifth edition of “Lebt und arbeitet in Wien“ builds upon a longstanding tradition of celebrating Vienna’s lively artistic discourse and diverse community of artists. Curated by Daniel Baumann, Michelle Cotton and Monika Georgieva, it focuses on new and recent works with 38 artists commissioned specifically for the exhibition and numerous artworks presented in Vienna for the first time.

The exhibition is accompanied by a new publication with commissioned texts on each artist and transcripts of conversations between curators, artists and critics in Vienna published in German and English.

„Lebt und arbeitet in Wien - Contemporary Art from Vienna“ ist zurück!

Erstmals 2000 von der Kunsthalle Wien organisiert, gilt die Ausstellung bis heute als eine Art Realitätscheck der Wiener Kunstszene. Die aktuelle und fünfte Ausgabe knüpft daran an und zeigt, wo Wien heute steht.

Kuratiert von Daniel Baumann, Michelle Cotton und Monika Georgieva versammelt die Ausstellung 56 Kunstschaffende, die in Wien leben und arbeiten – aus 42 Städten in 18 Ländern, von Newcomern bis zu etablierten Namen.

Gezeigt werden 130 Arbeiten an beiden Standorten der Kunsthalle Wien – MuseumsQuartier und Karlsplatz – in allen Räumen der Institution. Malerei, Skulptur, Installation, Zeichnung, Fotografie, Performance, Sound, Film und Video.

Vor Ort außerdem: ein mobiler Wiener Würstelstand (auch vegan), danach geht’s weiter in den Club Titanic.
