Because I perceive that you are perfect,
All I’ve seen you do is perfect in my eyes.

I used to remember how to fold little sheets of colored paper into exotic animals. After a time I started making up my own animals, because that to me was an evolution of the word exotic itself. Exotic, in fact, became #fantastic! Then I started folding humans instead of animals, eventually moving on to create little folded paper dolls of my whole family, including both sisters (even the one who died). Over the course of the year I’d veered so far off the beaten track that when I tried doing the exotic animals again, the traditional ones, I wasn’t as good at those anymore. Feeling defeated, I stopped with the thing altogether. For a long time. More recently I attempted to take it up again, folding little sheets of colored paper into anything, anything at all. Sadly, and perhaps predictably, the best I could do was a paper airplane. It sailed okay, but, that’s not the extent of what I was hoping to achieve. Not with something I actually used to be pretty good at. ~ Judy

When I was younger, there was a boy called Galileo who lived on my street and we were almost the same age, but I think he was a teency bit older. And when he was struck by a car outside my house, his parents sat out in the street crying up a storm until the ambulance came and took the body away. It seemed to last forever, all that crying. Galileo was named after the famous astronomer, but he never did anything inventive or intuitive. He was so bland, in fact, as to be almost forgettable. Yet, I still remember his little face. And the way he used to smile at me like I was something more special than the other kids from our street. ~ Judy

When the sky is iron gray in the morning, for some reason I think that should remark on the closing of a week, not the beginning of one; fresh starts to me were always like a bright, sunny Sunday. The older I got, this idea became smaller, and smaller. Now as an adult, it’s with a sad whimsy I still feel this childishness bubbling to the surface. We were so different when we were young. ~ Judy

My family used to be so normal until my sister passed away. She’d been only 14. At the funeral, my father held me so tight I thought my head would pop off. Pastor Bill was at the front of the church, next to the casket, retelling a humorous story about my sister I’d heard at least a few times before. In a papery voice my father leaned in and whispered, “You’re the only thing that matters to me.” At the time, I didn’t understand if that meant he didn’t care about my sister anymore, or my mother either? But it was just an odd phrasing; I could tell after a while he’d only wanted me to know I was loved. He was shaking pretty badly, too. I still remember how bad he was shaking. Like a solo earthquake. ~ Judy
