One of my favourite perennials in my garden is Rudbeckia Herbstonne that thrives in full sun or partial shade. It self-seeds and can grow 5 to 7 feet (168-214 cm) tall so sometimes flops over. I love the colour of the Monarda 'Balmy Purple' (Bee Balm), a herbaceous perennial, that grows in our front yard flower beds. It self seeds but can easily be moved in the spring and attracts bees and butterflies. The temperature yesterday rose up to 45°c with high humidity but I took these photos yesterday morning before it was too hot. If you're interested in Manitoba History and live in Winnipeg this National Historic Site is located on the northeast corner of Main Street and Rupertsland Avenue.The Battle of Seven Oaks took place on June 19, 1816 on a marshy plain known as Frog Plain that is now the West Kildonan area of Winnipeg. This monument was erected in 1891 and depicts a trade dispute between the Montreal North West Company and the London based Hudsons Bay Company. It has the following inscription: "Here at Frog Plain, on June 19, 1816 Robert Semple, Governor of the Red River Settlement and about 26 men confronted a North West Company Brigade from the Assiniboine River led by the young Metis clerk, Cuthbert Grant. The Metis saw the settlement as a threat to their way of life. Semple brave but obstinate was prepared to insist on his authority as Governor. Tempers flared. A shot was fired and Semple and twenty of his men were cut down. It has been raining constantly in Winnipeg (& Manitoba) the last few weeks. This morning seemed okay so we agreed to meet our nephew, his teenage son and 9 year old daughter at Assiniboine Park. By the time we got there it was raining. We had lunch at the Park Cafe but you can't contain a 9 year old inside so off we went to the English Gardens. The rain wasn't so bad, but the mosquitoes were horrendous and I'd forgotten the bug spray at home. We took a short walk through the gardens and I took a few photos. As we left, I met a woman who was well dressed in long pants, a sweater and had her camera under her raincoat. She was wearing mosquito-repellant clothing that are good for 70 washings. I had never heard of this before and I think if we're going to be in a wet soggy climate this summer and out taking photos, we need this apparel. My dad worked for CN most of his life, first in Kamsack, Saskatchewan and later at the Transcona Shops, Winnipeg. Many years later, the steam engine 2747 renewal in Transcona caught my attention as I remember being up close to them when they rolled into the Kamsack railway station. There was the "chuff-chuff" sound, the big brass bell ringing, the high pitch of the steam whistle and the clackety-clack of the huge wheels on the track. As a child, the noises were frightening and fascinating at the same time. Saturday, the Transcona Museum's held the Centennial Community Celebration for CN2747 at the Rotary Heritage Park in Transcona. There was a community BBQ, face painting and a tour of the engine. It was also a chance to meet other people in the community. The engine was the first steam locomotive built in the western region of Canada in April 1926 at the Canadian National Railway Shops here. The locomotive was scheduled to be scrapped with many other steam locomotives at the end of the steam era. Short story - in 1959 the Kiwanis Club of Transcona requested it be put on public display in the community. When the Kiwanis Club folded, it was transferred to the Midwestern Rail Association in 1981 then the Transcona Historical Museum in 2015. The Museum did many fundraising initiatives to build a shelter for it and to have it restored. The original number board 2747 on the front of the engine disappeared sometime in the 1980s and a new number board was unveiled at the celebration.
