VIP Preview of Frieze Masters 2026 is today! Visit us at booth E12, in the Queering Modernism section, until Sunday 18 October, to discover works by French Surrealist artist Claude Cahun and American feminist artist Judy Chicago, whose practices engage in a transgenerational dialogue around the theme of identity.
_
The selection aims at highlighting the profound affinities between two radical practices that, despite emerging in different historical and cultural contexts, share a common commitment to challenging dominant social paradigms and the very notion of identity.

I've done over 50 fireworks pieces over the course of my career, gradually increasing the scale until I was literally painting the sky.

When Donald and I were in Venice for my show at Alberta Pane Gallery, there was a small Claude Cahun photograph in her office. (Alberta handles her estate). Although we had seen the image in reproduction numerous times, we were riveted by the image; it was SO powerful.

I am thrilled to be paired with her at Alberta's booth at Frieze Masters and was amazed to discover the parallels Alberta and the curator found between our practices across geography and decades. by @judy.chicago

Shepard Fairey (best known for his "HOPE" poster), has been doing murals in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. When he discovered that the Rail Runner route ends in Belen, he decided he wanted to finish his New Mexico project in "Hub City", as our town is known because it is one of the three largest train switching centers in the country.

Fairey has invited me to collaborate with him on the mural, which will begin in the Spring. Had I not been 87, I would have whipped out my spray gun, gotten up on a scaffold and spray-painted beside him. But that isn't going to happen. Instead, we are discussing how one of my works might be repeated across the exterior of the 70-foot wall that Through the Flower is donating for his use. We have also been raising money to finance this project and a number of local people have generously stepped forward to help.

My hope for this project is that it will bring many visitors to Belen to spend the day to:
- Visit the Judy Chicago and Shepard Fairey mural
- Tour Through the Flower Art Space (which will be opening again once the mural is underway)
- Drink a glass of award-winning Jaramillo Wine
- Enjoy a delicious New Mexican meal at Pete's

We want to contribute to our community, which has provided a home for me and my husband, photographer, Donald Woodman, for over three decades. Shepard, Donald and I have devoted our lives and our work to trying to bring greater equality to everyone. We anticipate the possibility of many visitors, but only if we can mount an effective advertising campaign, which is why we need more tax-deductible donations. We hope that you will want to help and also, that once the mural is done, you will protect it as it will express many people’s hopes for a better future.

Dünyanı dolaşan “Qadınlar dünyanı idarə etsəydilər... İştirakçı “yorğanı”” indi isə Bakını bu layihənin növbəti mərhələsinə qoşulmağa dəvət edir.

📍 Bakı | 30 oktyabr – 1 noyabr

Conceived by world-renowned artist Judy Chicago in collaboration with DMINTI, this evolving participatory artwork invites audiences around the world to respond to Chicago’s questions, contributing their voices to a physical and digital quilt woven from these collective responses.

Now on view!

The @desaisset at Santa Clara University is restaging ‘The Four,’ a 1973 exhibition with my work alongside that of Lynda Benglis, Miriam Schapiro, and Bonnie Sherk. The experimental works on view challenged patriarchal art world norms by expanding the materials, content, and methodologies. This restaging combines the art originally in the show with archival materials from the curatorial process of ‘The Four’.

September 22 - December 11, 2026

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend but Kathryn Wade from Jessica Silverman Gallery will be representing me at the panel & reception on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at 3:30-5:30 p.m. by @judy.chicago

It's been five years since "The Flowering" came out! Here's a look back into the making of my definitive autobiography. We are thinking of continuing this idea of delving into some of the highlights of my career in a new Instagram series titled, "From the Archives." What do think about this idea and are there particular things you would be interested in seeing from our extensive archives?

Donald and I visited the "Reclaiming the Future: The Legacy of Japanese Incarceration" exhibition at Vladem Contemporary in Santa Fe. It is an incredible and very moving exhibition curated by Machiko Harada, an independent curator, thanks to the new, dynamite director of both the Vladem and its sister institution, the New Mexico Museum of Art. Many of the artists were familiar to us but others were not. Some of the work brought me to tears and reminded us of America's shameful history in terms of slavery; the ripping of children from Indian families and sending them to boarding schools; the incarceration of thousands of Japanese Americans despite their being citizens; and of course, the masked ICE agents separating families and forcibly taking children away from their mothers. Despite any explicit wall labels, the connections were chilling.

2- Judy Chicago and Donald Woodman, detail of "Arbeit Macht Frei/Work Makes Who Free?" from the "Holocaust Project", 1992, sprayed acrylic, oil, metal, wood, and photography on photolinen and canvas, 67 x 143 in. (Donald Woodman)

In the context of the exhibition ‘The Materiality of Judy Chicago’ we are pleased to welcome you to our Venice gallery on 18 September at 6pm for the talk entitled ‘Judy Chicago’s “The Dinner Party”: The Making Of’, a conversation between Diane Gelon, who worked on ‘The Dinner Party’ and helped to organize its worldwide, grass roots tour, and Francesco Spampinato, Director of the Second Cycle Degree in Visual Arts at Alma Mater Studiorum, University of Bologna.
_
The talk will focus on the making of ‘The Dinner Party’, Judy Chicago’s most famous work, now part of the collection of the Brooklyn Museum. Drawing on Diane Gelon’s first-hand experience of the project, it will explore the five-year process behind the work, which brought together more than 400 people and involved a wide range of techniques and materials. Conceived as a symbolic history of women in Western civilization, ‘The Dinner Party’ sought to bring women’s history to a wider audience at a time when the very idea that women had a history was still largely unacknowledged.
_
Save the date: Friday, 18 September, at 6pm!

I always admired Gloria; her grit, her glamor, her fortitude and her optimism. But it wasn't until she wrote the Introduction to my 2021 autobiography, "The Flowering" that I realized that she had visited - and been moved - by "Womanhouse", the 1972 female- centered installation that marked the beginning of Feminist art. Over the years, we had a number of interactions in which she demonstrated why she became such an important symbol to people all over the world. Who will pick up the torch she carried and help propel us forward at this bleak time?

NOW ON VIEW: “The End: A Meditation of Death and Extinction” at the Vancouver Art Gallery!

When I was creating this series ten years ago, it was the culmination of 50 years of studio practice and a concept visible through my work since the 1970s: the feminist principle that justice for all people is connected to a global justice that includes the humane treatment of all creatures.

“Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change” is the first major exhibition in Canada to examine the intersection of the climate crisis and contemporary art on a global scale. We have been warned about climate change for decades, but the human race has not been able to alter the course we are on - one that threatens not only the planet and the amazing creatures who share it but our own future as well.

What are you doing to help our environment? Put ideas of impactful actions in the comments below.
