Book: Operation Silkyara
Author: Saurabh Sharma
Genre: Non-Fiction (based on real event)
Publisher @juggernaut.in

12th November 2023, Uttarkhand - something went wrong inside the tunnel that was being constructed to connect Silkyara to Barkot. The tunnel's entrance had collapsed and 41 workers got trapped inside.

Operation Silkyara takes you to the heart of the tunnel collapse. It narrates each and every detail right from the day the tunnel collapsed to the very end of the rescue. The author being a journalist, i like how he has narrated the story which captures the long and uncertain wait, the challenges faced inside and outside. The author makes it feel like you are present at the tunnel collapse site. I liked that it also narrates what the workers felt mentally and physically inside each and every day. Besides this it also captures the state of the family members of the workers trapped. It also highlights the politics that surrounded the rescue - the protests by locals, pressures and politics by government officials that unfold behind the scenes while the rescue operation is underway.

Right from the start the book held my attention. There was never a dull moment. Its fast paced and will keep you hooked. Overall, this is a powerful story of survival, rescue, resilience and hope.

If you like to read stories based on real events then must read this one.

For Dr P. Jagannath, this book has been a long time coming. Writing it meant looking back at the patients, the families and the moments that stayed with him. We’re proud to bring his story to readers.

Mihira Sood’s Courting Equality is really a history of how Indian women had to make the law notice what society had learnt not to see. From Mathura to MeToo, the book places judgments beside the protests, movements, politics and ordinary lives that gave those judgments meaning. A rape case, a marriage dispute, a workplace complaint or a temple entry question is never treated as a matter confined to the courtroom. Each becomes a window into the assumptions about women that the law inherits from society.

The family occupies some of the book’s most difficult territory. Marriage, personal law, marital rape, restitution of conjugal rights, adultery, abortion and inheritance reveal a recurring contradiction: the law may recognise a woman as equal in principle while continuing to regulate her choices through marriage, religion and ideas of protection. Sood is particularly sharp on this distinction between protection and freedom. A rule can be framed for women’s safety and still take away their agency. The discussion of workplace restrictions, live in relationships and reproductive choice shows how easily paternalism can borrow the language of care.

Religion brings the question into even deeper territory. Shah Bano, personal laws, the Uniform Civil Code, Hadiya and Sabarimala are used to examine what happens when an individual right meets the authority of a community. Sood’s position is clear: constitutional rights cannot become weaker merely because the person claiming them belongs to a religious group. Her reading of Sabarimala is especially concerned with the woman as an individual rather than as a representative of a community, and with the constitutional possibility of treating menstrual exclusion as a form of untouchability.

Then the book moves beyond physical spaces of discrimination into speech, reputation and the digital world. Sexual harassment, MeToo, defamation, online misogyny and hate speech reveal another problem: women need freedom of expression to challenge power, yet that same public sphere can be used to threaten and silence them.
