House, psy-trance, feedback, and a little murder on the dancefloor. 😱💃

We’re kicking things off early tonight (Thu) with Habibi Funk at Somewhere, ELSE, before Sonic Moves takes over Pisco Bar KL on Friday for a night of house and electronic music, featuring guest DJ MIZUYO and celebrating MALIQMAL’s milestone birthday.

Saturday’s main event? Psychedelic Garden at Drip KL, where psy-trance heavyweights, including veteran DJ ODDICON (aka Odd), return from overseas festival runs to take us on a trip.

Meanwhile, Sonic Hangout brings two nights of loops, feedback, and electronic experimentation to Moutou on Friday and Saturday, featuring some of the scene’s finest.

Fancy something darker? Qi Bar gets an early Halloween treatment with Murder At The Disco on Saturday. Or head to RAPTROOM for Ahns’ debut album show, where the indie dreamscape artist unveils a world of lush textures and sound.

Different frequencies, different flavours. Pick your poison, gather your people, and let the weekend take it from here. 🤺

Thursday night, KL gets a taste of the Arab world’s lost grooves. Habibi Funk founder Jannis Stürtz returns to the city, digging deep into his archive of rare funk, disco, and forgotten gems from the pre-’90s Arab world.

Expect sun-drenched vintage jazz, hypnotic rhythms, and basslines built to move bodies. A dedicated crate-digger with a knack for unearthing musical treasures, Stürtz brings sounds once overlooked or nearly lost back where they belong: on the dancefloor.

From the infectious funk of the ’70s to the disco grooves of the ’80s, this is a deep dive into a rich musical history, served loud, sweaty, and unapologetically danceable.

Somewhere, Level 7, Else, 145 Jalan Tun H.S. Lee

Thursday, 15 October | 6 p.m. - 12 a.m.

Tickets: RM90

Event by Sputnik Rekordz & Sputnik Muzik Selekta.

Art should never come at the cost of safety.

On 11 October, artists, survivors, allies, and members of the public gathered at Dataran Merdeka for a solidarity gathering led by Seniwati, calling for accountability and safer spaces across Malaysia’s independent arts scene.

These concerns did not emerge overnight. For years, warnings about sexual harassment, abuse, and other forms of harm have circulated privately, while meaningful mechanisms for accountability have remained limited. Meanwhile, individuals identified in survivors’ accounts continue to receive platforms and opportunities, raising questions about the responsibilities of venues, organisers, producers, festivals, funding bodies, and other gatekeepers.

Independent arts spaces are vital ground for experimentation, dissent, and self-expression, particularly for communities often overlooked by mainstream cultural institutions. But creative freedom cannot come at the expense of safety, dignity, or the right to participate without fear of harm.

Seniwati’s five demands are clear: accountability, clear procedures, greater awareness, meaningful recourse for survivors, and survivor empowerment. These include robust safety protocols across arts organisations, access to legal and psychosocial support, protection from retaliation, and meaningful survivor involvement in shaping the policies designed to protect them.

The gathering was a public act of solidarity, but solidarity alone is not the end goal. Meaningful change requires the arts community to confront the power structures and enabling practices that allow harm to persist, and turn calls for safer spaces into concrete policies and action.

This is not about abandoning the independent arts scene. It is about protecting what makes it worth fighting for: the freedom to create, express, gather, and belong.

The question now is what happens next. Who will take responsibility, what mechanisms will be put in place, and how will the community ensure that calls for accountability lead to lasting change? by @juicemy
