The romantic story associated with Sanbangsan (산방산) on Jeju Island is the tragic love legend of Sanbandeok (산방덕) and her human husband, Goseongmok (고성목). According to the most commonly told version, Sanbandeok was a beautiful celestial woman who came down to the human world and fell in love with the kind, hardworking Goseongmok. They married and lived happily together. But a local magistrate became obsessed with Sanbandeok’s beauty. When she rejected him, he falsely accused her husband of a crime and had him exiled. Heartbroken at being separated from the man she loved, Sanbandeok returned to Sanbanggulsa Cave, on the side of Sanbangsan.
