Fair Ground is our annual exhibition of new work by Sussex artists. The title is taken from a musical stanza is Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem Sussex (1902), in which he describes the county as ‘beloved over all’. A hymn to the beauty of the place, Kipling saw his enchantment with Sussex as deeply rooted in an understanding of locality, a belief that the cottages, hedgerows, green rolling hills, seafronts, hidden coves and woodlands were all an integral part of connecting real people to their historical pasts. Each artist shown here brings their contemporary practice into conversation with generations of Sussex artists before them – a kind of visual poetry that traverses time and experience.

This year's artists are selected not for shared subjects, techniques or themes, but for the energy and possibilities that emerge when their distinctive practices are placed in conversation. A shared preoccupation with the landscape may reveal different ways of seeing; the exuberance of one work may sharpen the stillness of its neighbour. It’s within these surprising connections and dissonances that the exhibition finds its rhythm.

This year’s exhibition presents work by Katherine Allen, Julie Annis, Orlanda Broom, Amy Dury, Victoria Homewood, Bruce Ingram, Nils Jens, Gabriel Langlands, Rob Lyon, Roman McCullough, Fraser McQuade, Jane Merfield, Neil Morley, Jonathan Murphy, Marigold Plunkett, Rory Prout, Agnes Treherne, Rebecca Wells, Lucianna Whittle and Robin Barley-Williams.

Alongside the contemporary work, a selection of drawings, designs and ceramic pieces by the artist and designer Ann Wynn Reeves (1929-2017) will also be on display. A gifted draughtsperson, her contribution to the visual histories of Sussex has long been overlooked.

It's been a busy year since my solo show in May and I haven't been so much on instagram these days. My priority with any spare scrap of time is getting in the studio to paint, but family and jobs clammer for my attention.

Having said that, I'm enjoying life (am I allowed to say that? Hope it doesn't sound braggy). My three kids are pretty much okay at the moment and family life can be fun (as well as relentlessly hard work with all the caring, cooking and cleaning). The Art club I run for primary aged kids can feel chaotic and mad but the happy kids give me job satisfaction. I love my job with Turps East Sussex and feel it's such a privilege to be surrounded by so many interesting artists.

But doing it all is a puzzle that can never be solved. Many things, jobs, thoughts fall by the wayside, such is life.🫠

.. here's a few snapshots in time recalling a few things since May.

1. Install shot from solo show at @gallery19a (photo by @lydia_stonehouse)
2. Two day and two night retreat in a shepherd's hut at the foot of The Downs
3. Listening to Rose Wylie speak at the Charleston Festival @charlestontrust
4 & 5. Evening swims in the summer heatwaves
6. Organising the end of year show for @turpseastsussex
7. Family hols in France
8. My little robin friend. If the doors are open he will pop in and hop around the house several times a day looking for crumbs. He follows me around the garden and comes to me in my studio.
9. Brilliant paintings at @conditionsstudioprogramme
by my dear friend @lydia_stonehouse who has now moved to London 😭
10. I did a workshop and talk last week at Roedean School Art Department 😀

Tonight is the opening of Fair Ground at Glyndebourne. I have four paintings currently on view including these two. I stood in a field sketched the view one way, then turned 180 degrees and sketched the view the other way. Although the views are completely different, I somehow managed to make the compositions almost identical and like that, they are a sort of mirror of each other.

The show opens next week on Wednesday evening. Tickets for the PV are hot property but the show is open to the public until 13th December.

Julie Annis’s work explores the quiet tension between interior and exterior worlds. Using windows and framed views as recurring motifs, her paintings offer glimpses onto remembered or distant landscapes. These are not sweeping vistas, but held moments - spaces of stillness that evoke memory, longing, and the passage of time. Her compositions often unfold in horizontal segments, echoing the layered rhythms of the land, the chalk and clay local to the area of East Sussex Downland where Annis lives. Fragments of domestic linen, often repurposed bed sheets, are sewn or collaged together to form the painting surface. These materials carry a quiet human resonance: softened and worn by touch and time, their histories are echoed in the delicate, soft brushwork. The work is as much concerned with internal landscapes of the mind, as with the framed landscapes pictured within each aperture. The places Annis paints are located close to her home in East Sussex, initially sketched en plein air before being developed further in the studio. The compositions might be anchored by recurring motifs of cosmic spheres, moons, suns, and planets - that orbit the painted space whilst simultaneously being enclosed by inner landscapes of thought and memory. Atmosphere takes precedence over narrative, with themes of beauty, absence, and impermanence emerging subtly through repetition and restraint. Julie’s paintings can be viewed alongside 25 other artists in INSIDE | OUT at The Cot, Weavers Cot, Biddenden Kent TN27 8JB on show until Sunday 4 Oct. Please do pop along (fri - Sun 10.30-4pm). #groupexhibition #artinkent #whatsoninkent by @julesannis_

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of going to The Cot for the inaugural private view of the Cot Open, Inside | Out. Located in a tucked away corner of Kent, we had to wind through wooded roads and pretty villages to get there. The gallery space is set in beautiful grounds, normally the studio of artist and curator Jemimah Patterson.

My two paintings on show…

*Signs & Wonders (2025)*
Oil on domestic cotton
30.5 x 25.5cm

*Inside the blue hut (2025)*
Oil on domestic cotton
30.5 x 25.5cm

I typically didn’t take enough (hardly any) photos but you can see the rest of the artwork via @thecotopen instagram.

I was very pleased to have my work on show and be a part of the exhibition. Huge thanks to Jemimah Patterson, @leila__alexander and François de Lage.

The Cot is open Fri - Sun 10.30 - 4pm and otherwise by appointment until 4 Oct.

Had a little hiatus from this space but delighted to post that I’ve got a couple of pieces in the show Inside | Out @thecotopen which opens tomorrow. The exhibition will run until Sunday 4 Oct.

I’m looking forward to seeing the show tomorrow, alongside the work of the other exhibiting artists. Looks like a beautiful venue, and a nice drive from East Sussex countryside to Kent countryside.

Thank you so much to @jemimahpatterson, @leila__alexander and François Delage for including my work. The theme is very pertinent for me. I’m often thinking of inside-outside, here-there, now-then thoughts whilst in the studio.

Just come back from a couple of nights in a local shepherd’s hut. Trying to make it an annual retreat - I’ve been several times now. My small windows of studio time don’t allow me to spend so much time in the landscape I love, walking and sketching as regularly as I’d like. So I’m finding this way - spending a couple of nights a year immersed in the South Downs, makes for good research time for my work. It’s also nice to have uninterrupted thoughts. With my current family life (i’ve got 3 youngish kids) I wouldn’t be able to do a residency, so this is my answer to it. A mini 2 night retreat to walk, sketch and read. by @julesannis_

Last day of ‘in View of my Window’ today at @gallery19a. Gallery open 10am-5pm.

A situ photo by @lydia_stonehouse_ and then a couple of photos of me giving a very informal artist talk last Friday evening. Huge thanks to all who came along and supported me.

Big up to @gallery19a. It’s been such a lovely and welcoming artist run gallery to exhibit with. Thank you especially to @rachelmaryentwistle and @ar.chie.art for making me feel at home 🙏🙏. It might be out the way, but it has a strong community ethos and and interesting roster of exhibitions. It’s been nice to show my paintings here.. Do go and visit!
