Today, I spent my day on Capitol Hill meeting with Senator Tim Scott, Senator Lindsey Graham, and Representative Ralph Norman’s office to advocate for Alzheimer’s priorities that improve quality of life for those affected by the disease, support caregivers, and expand research opportunities.

The most important priority we discussed was the Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act. This legislation would create a pathway for Medicare to cover newly approved blood tests that can detect Alzheimer’s disease before symptoms appear. Early detection is critical because the treatments available today are only effective during the earliest stages of the disease.

When my Mimi was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s more than a decade ago, there were no treatments available to slow the progression of the disease. My family watched helplessly as Alzheimer’s stole her memories and independence. Today, that reality is changing. Some studies suggest that new treatments may add as many as eight years to life expectancy. To put that into perspective, my Mimi could have seen me graduate high school.

Every time I visit a memory care facility, I am reminded why this work matters. By the time many individuals receive a diagnosis, they have already missed the opportunity to benefit from these treatments. Earlier diagnosis means earlier intervention, more time with loved ones, and more precious memories preserved.

There may not have been anything I could have done to change the outcome for my Mimi, but I can advocate for the families facing this disease today and those who will face it tomorrow. Alzheimer’s does not have to be a death sentence. Through research, innovation, and policy action, we have the opportunity to change the future of this disease and give families something invaluable: hope. 💜
