Not the pregame @wer_denver post I planned, but that’s the heartbreaking thing about sport.

3 practices before our first game I ruptured my Achilles. Gutted. Devastated. No words can fully convey my sadness and disappointment and anger.

I’m not a religious person but I find myself searching for meaning when bullshit happens. While doom scrolling Achilles repair/rehab, I also did a bit of a deep dive on Achilles the Greek warrior and boy am I a fan.

Some history: Achilles was a brave Greek warrior. Known for his courage, independence and rage. The myth is that as a child, Achilles’ sea goddess mom dipped him by his heel into the River Styx making him *almost* immortal. That unprotected heel would be his downfall (and also where we get the proverbial, *or in my case literal* Achilles heel).

Achilles was stubborn af and fiercely loyal to his friends. He wasn’t a fan favorite (relatable) and pissed off a lot of Greek gods, resulting in a prophecy the he would die in battle. After his bff (and alleged gay lover) was killed by Hector in the Trojan war, Achilles goes on an absolute tear. To avenge his friend, he kills Hector in battle and drags his body behind his chariot. Ruthless.

Achilles was ultimately killed in battle. Shot by a poisoned arrow, guided by the god Apollo directly into his unprotected heel. The Achilles heel.

Achilles is relatable. Both the good: fearless, skilled, courageous, deeply loyal, warrior. And the bad: vengeful, impulsive, stubborn, pulled by hubris & rage. He was unwavering in his beliefs, even to his own detriment.

I guess maybe I like the idea that the thing that took me out of this season is based on a fucking warrior that exhibited many of the values and flaws I see in myself. Maybe I’m just loopy from the meds. But right now, my hubris and rage and pride says I won’t let this take me out of the battle for good. I work fucking hard. I earn everything I get. And I know I get to decide how my story ends.

Time to get back to work.
