My grandpa was an absolute legend 🤍

Back in the 40s, he began his career at the very back of the ballet, as an extra, pretending to play the balalaika 🎻😂. Somehow from there, he found his way into the world of the arts.

That’s how he met Jamie, my grandma, who was the first Black woman in the Ballet de Roland Petit in Paris. She, too, was an extraordinary, boundary-crossing woman who opened doors for others.

His first job in the press was at Paris Match, where he met some of his closest friends, including Jean-Marie Périer. For a while, JM even lived with him. There was family life on one side of the appartment, and on the other, JM was inviting the Rolling Stones, Johnny Hallyday, Françoise Hardy and half of rock history 🎸. He said that leaving Régis’ flat was the worst decision he ever made.

He then took on a project, turning a radio show called Salut les Copains into a magazine. The first issue sold out in one morning. They had to reprint immediately 🤯. From there, he went on to shape what people would read, look at, and talk about.

Mid 70s he flew to the US to re-establish Look magazine, but it didn’t take off. He came back to France heartbroken. His career had plenty of trials and failures, and that’s something he taught me. Success isn’t linear. You keep pushing. You stay curious.

He went back to France and, with his friends, decided to try to relaunch a magazine you might have heard of: Elle. He became publication director, and few years later finally got his dream, launching Elle in the US in the mid 80s. And that changed everything.

He put women of all backgrounds and skin colours on the page. He wanted something approachable and truly for all women.

His superpower was his curiosity. He knew everything about pop culture and was probably the oldest Beyoncé stan 🐝😂. He taught me about art, culture, beauty, work, ambition, and especially humour, and I grew up listening to his stories with stars in my eyes 🤩.

He was loyal, shy, and funny. Complicated, brilliant, demanding, kind in his own way.

Rejou. Ronron. I was never allowed to call you “grandpa”.

It was a movie 🥹✨
One made by the people we love most. There was no wedding planner, no caterer, no big team behind the scenes. Just our incredible community – friends who cooked, coordinated, set up, cheered us on, and made magic happen. We were the main characters, but the supporting cast… Everything ✨

We’ll never get over the joy, the laughter, the love, it was beyond anything we could have dreamed. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We’ll carry this with us forever ❤️
