Film photography has been my passion for over a decade now but being online is really messing with me. I don’t like the new Instagram. This used to be a place where you could show your work, your love, your passion and you used to be able to connect with like-minded people. Used to be able to use hashtags so that people could find your work and make friends. Nowadays, Instagram is literally just a marketing website. Everyone is on here just doing sales. We’ve lost the plot. This was originally a place to interact with friends. Now it’s a place where your friends barely interact with you. At least in my case that’s true. I regret deleting my original Instagram with 1500 followers that were mostly people that were into my film and made me feel supported and seen. Now I have like 200 followers because I made a new account and only about five of my friends like my post (thank you) and the most dystopian thing I see is all the people who watch my stories, they see me literally asking for support and yet they choose not to, even though it’s free to like a photo. More people send me secret likes through my DM’s or my Instagram stories but it seems like nobody likes to publicly support me and that makes me extremely sad. Also, by the way, I just wanna inform some people about film. Each roll of film is 24-36 photos costs me 20, development cost another 20, and the time that I take to scan (with my 1400 $ scanner that I invested in), dust my film, color correct, and crop. Yall don’t understand that process takes hours just for one roll. And in the past, it seemed worth it, but I am just experiencing a really bad time online and being on here has only made me more lonely. So depending on how people continue to interact with my content will be the deciding factor if I’m going to stay online or if I’m just gonna completely get off this thing because it is not worth feeling like loser when I put in so much effort and then nobody cares. I have to prioritize my mental health and well-being and I don’t know if I can continue being online if I’m gonna feel so isolated.
