Hi everyone!🤍 I’d like to introduce myself and share a bit about my work.

I’m Julia, an artist based in Berlin, Germany. Creativity has always been a part of me, I drew before I walked, and my early life was filled with art. I studied graphic design for 6 years and worked as a designer and art director for 14 years, before I started my artistic practice in 2024.

Creating free-flowing wall sculptures came to me naturally, offering a strong contrast to the fast-paced world we live in and my years of experience in digital design. This process allowed me to slow down and reconnect with myself and my family story. My grandmother worked as a painter in a ceramic factory during the Soviet Union, and I remember seeing these pieces as a kid in my grandparents’ house, where I spent my childhood summers. I feel I’m intuitively continuing this tradition with my own sculptural practice and connecting with those memories, that sense of freedom, and unconditional love.

I’m grateful for this journey and excited to see where it takes me.

The project was many years in the making, and only materialized visually in clay this year. Around 9 years ago, driven by questions of connection, origin, and family history while living far from home, I began creating my family tree. This journey involved travels, warm conversations with relatives, uncovering fascinating stories and images of ancestors I never met, and ultimately mapping over 250 individuals over more than two years. This intimate experience, coupled with surprising DNA test results revealing connections to countless places, solidified my sense of belonging and the universal truth of human migration and interconnectedness across millennia.

This particular piece is an ode to my grandmother, whom I dearly miss. Its golden hue directly references her affectionate greeting, "Hi, my dear, hi, my golden!",
a memory of her warm heart and the unconditional love I was lucky to experience. My childhood summers at her countryside home were filled with observing nature, particularly the peony bushes alive with ants drawn to their sweet nectar. This sculpture serves as an important memory, a place I can return to whenever I need to feel loved and connected to those beautiful moments.

Incredibly happy to take part in the Du bist am Zug project this summer! They develop and test new forms of individual expression in urban space where residents can encounter each other’s worlds.

From July 28, for 4 weeks, Berlin is filled with amazing posters, nobody knows where each of them appears. It became a fun game with an interactive map! I found 3 fantastic posters last week and @el.pigmentum.2 found mine in West Berlin, at the Kleistpark bus station. Thank you so much, @dubistamzugberlin @wallgmbh @printpiloten for selecting my work and for this fantastic opportunity to share it with the city ❤️

Introducing Julia Ost  Julia Ost (b. 1987 in the USSR) is a Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist exploring traditionally feminine qualities and hidden layers of our emotions through free-flowing, low-relief sculptures. Her work is guided by intuition and a deep connection to her matriarchal roots. Ost’s fascination with clay stems from her grandmother, who worked as a painter in a ceramics factory.
Ost’s prior work in design informed her artistic practice, in which she emphasizes structure, composition, and visual clarity. Her work has been selected for juried exhibitions in Japan, Portugal, the UK, the USA, and Germany.
