Flying to Cork with my love and a good book in disguise (😂) after a long summer in London, discovering Hampstead Heath’s shady old woods with @kerstinkartscher, shooting for a whole month with this crowd 😁, improvising paintings 7 days a week (truly), visiting my bro in hospital, more improvising, a nurse bin lid, a painting caught hiding in my studio, and Mother Eira age 92 visiting plus fave @royalacademyarts summer show works (I went 7 times), including meeting @katherinejones_pp RA for high adventure and getting in the water, invited for a day out to try fly fishing, which is very technical 👍 to do.
🥵 A hot summer but so glad for my refuge, my cross breezes studio…….at @bow arts Hampstead Road, London. A joy for all of us lucky enough to have a studio there. by @juliawarr

In 2010 I made a site specific series of paintings called 8 days a week for a Williamsburg apartment lobby, each 42 x 36”.

NOTES NOV 2010
“I have a compulsion to make formal arrangements of images in a grid pattern, usually figurative. Usually frontal. I have been painting in this way for more than 10 years. Every painter is defined by the marks they leave on the surface and mine is the pattern of the grid.

In my most current work I made a series of 7 paintings, which are shown together. Each one bears a remarkable resemblance to the next. I painted a new one every day from memory while trying to make them all the same as each other. I likened this relationship to printing.

Barry Schwabsky, Art Forum 2005:
" There is something determinedly blank about Warr's pictures - just as blank as the faces within them, their mouths and eyes reduced to dots and dashes in some inpenetrable Morse code of expression. But rather than the blankness of unfeeling, it's that of a feeling that simmers patiently under a look of pretend innocence, determined to give nothing away."

This new series 8 Days a Week has come from somewhere between handmade and mass produced, between painting and cast off print. It seems like the right moment to explore that further, and do some printing. I would welcome the expertise and creativity of the Lower East Side Print Workshop master printers to make a series of prints which would also follow on from my print contribution to the former Peter Stuyvesant Foundation in 2004” @mr_tranquil_tranquil_waters. @artforum taken in Williamsburg, Brooklyn by @juliawarr

The Art in Archway Festival began on Sunday morning and ended four days later except for a wall mural by @hellsgibson. Go see! My first time painting outdoors and not flat on tables. I will continue! Take note! Need a new studio in London from December with walls and doors high enough. Am happy to share, as I spend half the year in two 3 month chunks of time far away (got enough space there ). DM me if you want me to share a studio with you, in NW1 or N19 most of all but I am open to ideas. Working at scale matters to the work now. More later. Not abandoned my collage project. This body of work will be photographed in September. Excited about that too. Many thanks to John at AP Fitzpatrick for technical assistance. taken in Navigator Square by @juliawarr

We’re excited to introduce our first artist that will be live painting at the Art in Archway Festival this Sunday:

@juliawarr

Julia Warr is a visual artist creating between London and New York and lives in Archway.

Warr is currently making improvised abstract patterns with painted collage on canvas and with her love of grids and the interlocking shapes, we’re intrigued to see what she creates on the day.

Come on down to Navigator Square and check out pop-up galleries, live painters, a market, a vinyl session, mural paintings, and creative activities 🫟

Sunday 28th June

11am - 6pm

Let’s make Archway colourful 🌈

She stepped back in 2006 to raise her children. Her practice continues and she was selected for the John Moores Painting Prize in 2016 and curated the painting show ‘Julie’s Bob’ in 2021 for Terrace Gallery, London.

And again. Thank you to chief curator @ryanjgander and the volunteering RA academicians for all the time they put in to viewing 18K pieces of work for this Summer Show! Ryan Gander: “I’m really into associations and serendipity and chance – the way things collide, all the weird noises that are made when things come together that you wouldn’t expect. For me, the Summer Exhibition is like a masterwork in association, because it’s so wildly sporadic.’
The result, he hopes, will be a kind of ‘sociological diagram… representing what we share communally, in an era where everybody’s obsessed with identity politics and differences.’ What coordinating the show has taught him is that Britain in 2026 is a lot more hopeful than is generally assumed. ‘It manifests itself in people sharing their love and their interest in a subject – or maybe how they use those subjects as a kind of escapist distraction from the world.’ Me: I’ll be at Varnishing Day in a little over a week. Goood. by @juliawarr

I am grateful to the RA for selecting my work. @ryanjgander is the chief curator and he seems a fascinating choice. His favourite kind of art, he says, is art that doesn’t announce itself as art – work that allows for a “natural” response and as such defuses any political or class associations’.
He is more interested in the art of language and ideas – ‘art based on the brain.’ Can’t wait to see this show. by @juliawarr
