On their ballots, San Francisco voters will see eight people running for three spots on the San Francisco Community College Board.

City College (CCSF) is a public community college with a 90-year history. It serves about 40,000 students and offers free tuition to city residents.
The school has struggled in recent years. A decade ago, mismanagement of its finances almost forced City College to close and led to a sharp drop in enrollment — which meant fewer state dollars and budget cuts. It laid off staff, canceled classes, and this summer closed its Downtown campus.

The board will face tough decisions, so KALW asked all the candidates what they would cut or consolidate and what they would protect.

This year, a new state rule went into effect: California’s first, and second graders have to take a reading assessment — school districts had to pick a program to run the assessment. San Francisco chose Amira Learning.

Amira is an app that uses AI to teach kids how to read and measures how well they’re doing. Education reporter, Julia Haney, went to the Tenderloin Community Elementary School to observe students using the program. For the full story visit: www.kalw.org. by @juliawrighthaney

Earlier this month, San Francisco teachers went on strike for the first time in almost 50 years. The contract they won could come at a price: Superintendent Dr. Maria Su said that future school closures are on the table.

One small alternative district high school — The Academy — already received this news in the fall. The district said it would relocate students to Wallenberg High School and called the decision a “standalone” one.

In the months that followed, students organized walkouts and spoke out at school board meetings, pleading with district leaders to reconsider.

At the first school board meeting after the closure announcement, one by one, Academy students stepped to the podium. They spoke about their frustration: “I feel ignored”; their fears: “in reality this is an opportunity to lose friends, my support system in school, my good grades, and also lose myself”; and their loss: “what we are feeling is grief.”

This story is about more than a big reaction to the closing of a small school. It’s about how the district’s decision to close this school is making room for another’s expansion and resurfacing a decades-old tension.

United Educators of San Francisco and SFUSD have reached a tentative two-year agreement as of early this morning.

“This enhances our efforts to recruit and attract talented educators to work in San Francisco public schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Maria Su.

The agreement comes after the first teachers strike in San Francisco in almost 50 years.

*Correction: A tentative agreement has only been reached on sanctuary policy, not housing policy.

San Francisco's educators are on strike today and picketing outside their schools, including at Washington High School in the Richmond, after negotiations stalled over the weekend. The district says, "We are trying to avoid salary increases coming at the expense of critical resources for students." Talks will continue starting at noon today. by @juliawrighthaney

The union is asking for a 9% wage increase over two years, but the district’s most recent offer is 6% over three years.

On Feb. 4, a state-assigned fact-finding panel released a report with recommendations.

The panel recommended a 6% raise, but over two years. The report states that the union’s wage and benefits demands would likely be rejected by the state, calling the proposal “not budget neutral.”

But the parties aren’t just negotiating pay raises. In fact, the union says its other demands are of equal priority. These include improvements to special education, protections for housing insecure and immigrant families, and fully covered health benefits.

Maximus Simmons is in his second year as a student director on the Oakland Unified School Board.

Student leaders in Oakland have have used their power to make real change, including leading the charge to get 16- and 17-year-olds the right to vote in school board elections.

Now, Maximus and his fellow student director Marianna Smith are carrying that advocacy forward, making sure student voices are heard. But when it comes time for them to cast their votes, there's a catch.

At the start of the school year, the Chronicle reported that 21 San Francisco schools were missing at least one crossing guard.

After public outcry, SFMTA — which runs the crossing guard program — said it would work to fill empty positions by the end of 2025. But it missed that goal.

An SFMTA spokesperson said that while the agency has been hiring over the last few months, it’s also faced staffing turnover and is relying on “ambassadors” to fill the gaps.

Today, teachers in West Contra Costa Unified District held their first-ever strike. The local Teamsters union, which represents roles like food service workers and security guards, was also on strike after rejecting a tentative agreement with the district.

"A lot of the teachers I've just seen come and go because they can't afford to live in this area and with the money that they are offering us. It makes it impossible," said Richmond High Math Teacher Emilia Calderon.

Superintendent of WCCUSD Cheryl Cotton said in an email this afternoon that United Teachers of Richmond had agreed to "return to the table" to meet with the district today at 4pm.
