When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

CLAY PLAY! Join us for our next creative exploration at the shop of lighthearted play with air-dry clay. Once again, this is less instruction-based and more an invitation to come get silly with your hands and try something new…or old…or anywhere in between.

This time we’ll be hosting back-to-back evenings on Tuesday, Sept 29th and Wednesday, Sept 30th so you can take your pick. Tuesday will be our more social, chatty night, and Wednesday will be reserved for a slightly quieter, drop-in-get-focused gathering. We can’t wait to see you at one or the other!

Visit our bio for link to tickets. $18 includes materials, tools, and light snacks/drinks. Lucky us, we still have some wine from @unionsacrewinery !

Scroll through for some of our favorite ceramics currently around the shop 🩵🩵🩵

It’s hard for me to believe that two giants—both literary and heroes of the human heart—have passed within ~two weeks of one another, but it also occurs to me that Wendell Berry and Annie Dillard could no longer bear this earth in its current form. Onto the next one. In the meantime, I’ll be treasuring how they both, in their own way, have taught me to see the world—deeply, fully—and to love it even so. 🤍

“I am a frayed and nibbled survivor in a fallen world, and I am getting along. I am aging and eaten and have done my share of eating too. I am not washed and beautiful, in control of a shining world in which everything fits, but instead am wondering awed about on a splintered wreck I’ve come to care for, whose gnawed trees breathe a delicate air, whose bloodied and scarred creatures are my dearest companions, and whose beauty bats and shines not in its imperfections but overwhelmingly in spite of them…”

People have often asked us over the last two years how we managed to travel like we did in 2024/2025 with two small kids. We managed it because we never thought we couldn’t (which does not mean there weren’t tough moments!)—and I truly believe it was the best thing we could have ever done for our family. It glued us together in ways that I hope will never come undone. It gave our boys the opportunity to see that even when things are unclear or tricky or absolutely absurd (and they were…frequently), we could always still figure it out together as a team, and usually laugh about it even while it was happening.
We talk about some memory from our time away pretty much every day, and it makes me think about how big our life became by moving towards joy. How big our life has BECOME by moving towards joy. Sometimes a big life lives in 1 square mile (like ours currently does)—and sometimes it travels round the world. “Be joyful though you have considered all the facts” — as Wendell Berry says.
Or this, from my other longtime teacher, Mary Oliver.
“If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don’t hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty of lives and whole towns destroyed or about to be. We are not wise, and not very often kind. And much can never be redeemed. Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this is its way of fighting back, that sometimes something happens better than all the riches or power in the world. It could be anything, but very likely you notice it in the instant when love begins. Anyway, that’s often the case. Anyway, whatever it is, don’t be afraid of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.” by @juliepointeradams

Two things that stopped me in my mental tracks (from my four year old, who was somehow this little person not so long ago):
— He’s been confidently saying “I changed my mind” a lot lately and for someone (me) who didn’t discover this was an okay thing to feel and say aloud until far too recently, I hope the ability to change (and to continually fine-tune/enlighten/expand) his mind becomes a lifelong way of being.
— Just this morning he said in the midst of getting his clothes on: “I want you to be here but I don’t want help.” The simplest expression of human desire for mere presence and the intimacy of being witnessed—without the other person stepping in to fix or help or problem-solve (or constantly wanting to correct/praise, point out silver linings, or impart lessons). To just BE with my children in the fullness of who they are. This is my constant lesson in motherhood/personhood/existence!

We had the best time hosting our first Clubhouse Nights event with our Let’s Collage gathering! What a night—we loved having so many women fill our space with lively conversation, low-stakes creativity and paper play. This felt especially full circle for me, having begun my career by bringing people together around the table many moons ago. We can’t wait to host you all for many more similar-spirited events.
If you’d like to be included in our infrequent newsletter mailing list for gatherings, etc visit our site and scroll to the bottom (or just dm me). ✨ by @juliepointeradams

A slightly different version of Studio Notes this go-around! We frequently get asked at the shop (understandably) what our connection to Denmark is. We both have Scandinavian roots (Norwegian and Swedish) but my ties to Denmark grew independently of family lines. 20 years ago I serendipitously hopped in the car last minute for a concert in LA—I met and quickly befriended the accompanying Danish viola player, who I’ve now known and considered a dear friend for half my life. His love of home piqued my curiosity enough to bring me there not much later. At 23 I flew to Copenhagen for the first time at just this time of year and lived and worked on two different farms in tiny, remote places (a postage-stamp of an island and a small village not far from the German border). These sketches and drawings you see here are from my time there—and the photos are from various places and visits around Denmark across the years. That initial experience changed my life in more ways than I can share, and my subsequent visits and stays over time have left a deep imprint on my entire being. In a way, I found for myself a homeland I didn’t know I was missing.

Denmark—its people, its landscape, its culture— fills a huge part of my inner landscape, even though my time spent there is fractional compared to other places I’ve lived. Ryan has quickly come to have the same love for that place, and we think of our shared times there near-daily. While we can’t claim a blood connection to Denmark or the Danish people and their way of life, we feel it in our bones. And we hope to share a tiny sliver of it with you through the Sommerhus collection.❤️ by @juliepointeradams
