//INTERVIEW
Julius Töyrylä

Julius Töyrylä is a Finnish photographer based between Helsinki and Tunisia. He got his first camera from his godmother at fifteen and spent years documenting his hometown before studying fine art in Turku. He has been recording his dreams for over twenty years. In 2019, one dream came to him in Quechua, a language he had never encountered. That was the start of his ongoing project "Black Book", which pairs written dream accounts with photographs. He works with long exposure, double exposure and high ISO, building instability into the image on purpose.

Q: How did photography start for you? What made you pick up a camera?

A: My godmother gave me my first camera, and I started documenting my environment in my hometown, Orimattila, Finland. It was 2006, and I was 15 years old. At first, I didn’t feel that a camera could be a tool for subjective expression — that came later. In the beginning, I was just taking plain photos of things I saw.

I remember photographing a sleeping drunken man in the street. When I got the film developed, I felt ashamed of having taken the image. I burned it and didn’t tell anyone.

Self-expression and subjectivity came years later, around 2014, when I entered art school in Turku, Finland, and began to see the possibilities of the medium more clearly.

Some documentations from ODDFest 2026.

Got to shoot mainly in Tavastia this year. There were a bunch of new bands for me and midst of shooting I got to experience great shows and I am pretty stoaked about it. Everyone was special and unique but personal shout outs goes to my favourite live band Muovipussi and to energy driven Pelkkää Hyvää band. Also got to listen to Felix Alexander Lybeck’s music live for the first time ever and got blown away how subtle and beautiful it sounded. Definetly worth to check all of the bands out.

Huge thanks to Wanda (@wandaorly) for shouting about this festival and a warm thanks to a fellow Pallas’s cat lover Laura (@hi_itslaura) for getting me on board.

And thanks to ODDFestival people and collegues! Was a nice time!📸🖤 by @juliustoyryla

Heli Hartikainen, 2026
Studio photography

After so many times shooting Heli on different occasions and in concerts, we decided to go for studio shoots for them! My aim here was to make variation in lighting and composition situations so the photos can be used for multiple purposes, and I am stoked with what we came up with in around 1.5 hours.

I could not make this post without blasting something about their amazing art. I feel like Heli is one of the most versatile soundscape artists, composers, and saxophonists at the moment. I first heard their music around 2024 with the first solo project, CHRONOVARIATIONS. I walked past that one even though I heard a lot of people talking about it here in Finland. Then I remember shooting Heli in concerts multiple times and realised that, for me, their music is best when seeing and hearing it live. The music creates some sort of concentration state for me. I like to listen to Heli’s music on buses and trains and just look at the ever-changing scenery. And in live occasions I just feel at piece. Hard to explain music that you should just hear. Hah.

They just released more music about a week ago. The project is called Interbody, and my favourite piece is called Pneuma. An interesting fact I heard from Heli was that they co-developed a live-electronic sampler organism with sound engineer Kaj Mäki-Ullakko for this project that responds to Heli’s playing in real time. Such a cool way to make music. I recommend you go and listen to it.

Enjoy the photos and check out Heli! Peace! 🖤 by @juliustoyryla

New music, new headshots and something beyond!

I’ve had the privilege of getting to know @juliustoyryla from his amazing concert photography, but this time we decided to rent a studio for a couple of hours to try out something else. I loved how easy it felt to be in front of Julius’ camera and the creative flow we had. If you’re an artist or just any type of human being (which also includes but isn’t limited to artists) in need of some good photography, check out Julius’ work! What a beautiful person and artist to work with! Sharing just a few of my favorite shots here, and be prepared for me spamming a dozen more of them in the upcoming weeks 😇

Have you noticed my new EP Interbody came out last Thursday? This time with this release I didn’t put any money into a PR campaign of any sort, which means, as an independent artist, I am solely relying on YOU, dear reader. You can probably imagine what it’s like to try to get the message out there about your avant-garde music when the world is burning and the algorithm isn’t really designed to amplify weird but cool electroacoustic solo saxophone releases, am I right?

It would mean the world to me if you listened to Interbody, shared it with a friend, bought it on Bandcamp, posted about it and tagged me, or any other way to show even the smallest amount of support and that you heard me. This doesn’t only include me, but I surely can talk on behalf of other indie artists as well. Support what is good and stay on the bright side ❣️ by @juliustoyryla

This has been one of the most fun projects I’ve had in a long time. 🖤

Teemu from Music Finland called me earlier this year to ask if I could do a series of photos for illustration purposes. The brief was “abstract photos, with some lights or something” — and I decided to deliver!

All the photos are from different music venues and I used only the available surrounding light. This meant a lot of LEDs, lamps, and reflections. I also used double exposure and kept the editing pretty minimal — colors were adjusted in some of the photos, along with brightness and contrast, but that’s about it, no AI or heavy removing/adding on post etc.

My aim was to make the feeling of the photos as authentic as possible — so you can still kind of tell they’re taken in venue spaces, but shot with surrealism and abstraction in mind. So if you were there you could kinda noticed what were the places where they were shot. For example, you can find Linda Fredriksson’s flute in the last photo and ordinary street lamps shot with long exposures (around 1–2 seconds) in the third photo.

My last “gig” for this series is at Helsinki Music Week and I decided to shoot more conventional there, so the project could have more variety and a calm ending. I hope to see you there! 📸

Most of the shots were shot in Tallinn Music Week and April Jazz Festival in Helsinki. by @juliustoyryla

Ropsu ll
2026

I went through the photos and wanted to share more of these. I can’t believe we only shot for 1,5 hours and got so many good photos. The first one is one of the best portrait shots I have taken in a studio. Period. Somehow I managed to nail the lightning just the way I visioned with the vibe we were going for. I have always been a formalist when it comes to studio — shapes, form and structure enhances the photo for me almost every time over anything else.

Aitäh Tallinn! What an intense, exciting and fun few days I had at @tallinnmusicweek !

I was actually pretty nervous about the showcase festival: not that much for the music and playing part (well, not to lie, I was a lil excited about it too) but the marketing part of it. I’ve never felt an ease with when it comes to “selling” my music but well, that’s what showcases are for in many ways, a marketplace. Turns out: I met a huge amount of the most lovely people who are connected by the love for music. I had a full house of audience listening to my playing with amazing focus that I would not have expected. I had such good time playing, listening to a bunch of amazing showcase gigs, meeting amazing artists and lovely people, learning more every day. Thank you everyone involved, new friends all over the world!

Special thanks to @blowupthatgramophone for giving me the opportunity, @kultuurivabrik for the coolest of venues and brilliant sound and light crew!

Ropsu
2026

We met years ago with Ropsu in a shoot I was putting together and Ropsu was late but showed up eventually. So it is the funniest thing that from this particular shoot here, she was late again. We love her for that. (She really wasn’t THAT late…).

We just talked today and noticed that our amazing chemistry must have been partly because of our shared history with adoption — I feel we both had a level of understanding and trust that made us not feel any akwardness when we worked together. As a personal level, it felt somehow liberating to work with a person who shares a part of a similar history and a view that not many people can experience… So in a way this seems like a start for a bigger body of work with a theme. We will see.

I also want to say, that I am genuinely happy to call her a friend and felt priviledged to shoot these for and with her.

R, you are the sweetest and the best! 🖤 by @juliustoyryla
