The scent of jasmine tea is a close cousin of a battle siren.

Jasmonate, the hormone named after jasmine, is an alarm molecule that coordinates plant defense. When it spreads through a wounded plant, that plant answers by manufacturing what it thinks are weapons but what we consider supplements: the withanolides in ashwagandha root, the carnosic acid in rosemary leaf, the rosmarinic acid in lemon balm, the glucosinolates in maca, the berberine in barberry, the curcuminoids in turmeric, and the piperine in black pepper. The compound families our formulas are built from. No alarm molecule, no active compounds. Every formula we sell is a bottled response to the jasmonate siren.

When you lift a cup of jasmine tea, you are smelling the same chemistry at peace. A fire alarm, rescored as a lullaby.

Every 1,000 meters you climb, UV goes up by roughly 10% ☀️ Maca grows at 4,000 meters...

That's the Peruvian puna, above the tree line, where there is no shade and nothing taller than the plant itself. A plant that can't move out of the light has to make its own protection, so maca's leaves load up on UV-absorbing compounds that soak up the radiation before it can wreck the cells underneath. Meanwhile the root, the part we use, banks the energy all that sunlight paid for.

Lowland plants never have to build defenses on this scale. Maca has to build them every day, which is why it's the cornerstone of our HIM formulation..

Turmeric's most famous molecule curcumin acts as a natural pesticide, fungicide, and antimicrobial agent. It protects the plant's underground rhizomes (roots) from soil-borne pathogens, fungi, insects, and herbivores. It has never seen the sun.

This is exactly why it's so famously reluctant to dissolve in water: in the soil, water-solubility would mean washing away with the first rain.

Human absorption was simply never part of the pant's design brief, which is exactly why a good turmeric ritual pairs it with fat and black pepper to improve bioavailability.

You drank a solution of insect neurotoxin this morning and called it coffee.

Caffeine exists because plants that made it poisoned the insects chewing them. At leaf doses it kills larvae. But some plants eventually figured out that, at smaller, non-lethal doses, the same molecule happens to sharpen a bee's memory so pollinators come back to the right flower. One compound, two doses, two completely different jobs.

Your espresso is the third dose. The plant never planned that one. by @junai.life

Not every enemy is close by and has a mouth. Some of them are 150 million kilometers away and made of plasma.

Rosemary grows in full Mediterranean sun, so its leaves are packed with carnosic acid, an antioxidant that works as a sacrificial shield. When UV light sets off a cascade of free radicals inside the leaf, carnosic acid takes the hit first, oxidizing itself so the plant's cells don't have to. Rosemary makes its own sunscreen and spends it every sunny day.

That molecule is why rosemary is in Junai Her: an antioxidant its maker has tested on itself every summer for millions of years.

You have eaten a detonated chemical weapon. On sushi.

Wasabi and its relatives (basicall every member of Brassica) keep a two-part weapon in every part of the plant: a harmless storage compound in one cellular compartment and the enzyme that activates it in another, like epoxy that stays inert until you mix it. Crushing or grating the tissue mixes them and the burn you feel is the detonation, a chemical defense strategy that existed for millions of years before anyone put it next to pickled ginger and raw fish.

Insects have hated this trick since day one. You ordered extra along with pickled ginger at the sushi bar and giggled about it with your friends as your eyes watered.

This leaf makes carbs act smaller 🌿

A sugar impostor in white mulberry leaf, called DNJ, stalls the enzymes that finish digesting carbs. Mulberry's chemical deterrent is so successful, it only has one herbiverous predator, the famous silkworm.

Luckily, you aren't a silkworm and DNJ still works on you just fine. A molecule evolved to starve insects, and millions of years later, at supplement doeses in the human digestive tract, it helps prevent ingested carbohydrates enter the bloodstream.

That explains half of the botanicals in our GLP-1 Slim. The other, berberine, is a chemical weapon just the same, just that its enemies reside underground.

Plants can't run. Intuitive and obvious, sure, but consider the ramifications: a thing that cannot flee has to fight where it stands, and the only weapon available to something with no teeth, no claws, and no legs is chemistry. So plants became chemists. The arms race between them and everything that eats them has been running for 400 million years without a single ceasefire.

Which brings us to your supplement cabinet. The berberine in it, the mulberry leaf, the ashwagandha, the rosemary, the black pepper that makes the rest work better: their active compounds are weapons from that war. Not inspired by it, not a metaphor for it, but the actual munitions, built to stop insects, fungi, and environmental stressors from killing them.

At different dosages, in different context, with different digestive systems, humans can use those weapons to our advantage. Once you see the supplement shelf that way, as us benefitting from millions of years of evolutionary war chemistry, it never looks the same again. Evolutionary biologists have made the point bluntly: most plant compounds that do anything interesting to humans are anti-herbivore chemistry finding their old targets in a new animal.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be taking a look at this war, meeting the plants and their herbiferous foes, and examining the reasons those compounds work on us. Why does white mulebrry help you limit the amount of carbs entering your bloodstream? Because it developed a chemical deterrent that made bugs starve even with a full stomach.
