After a fabulous weekend at The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, The Living Ancestors are currently resting! Thank you so much for a wonderful and amazing set of shows, and inviting us to be a part of the 2026 BlakTinx Festival at BAAD!. And thank you for hosting us in such wonderful and caring ways. To dance with the ancestors in the space as The Living Ancestors was beyond words. Thank you so much to the technical and front of house staff at BAAD. Kamila, Mateo, and William you made our lives so easy.

Thank you MIDHEAVEN Network for helping us create our lighting and audio experience. If you liked the sound quality during our show, you have Adrian Martinez to thank for this.

Thank you so much Brian Polite for not only moderating one talkback, but both talkbacks!

Thank you, Rachel Keane for sharing these amazing photos and capturing multiple stages of the living ancestor and the SATURN project.

To the witnesses/audience in the space… You have given us a phenomenal experience to carry, be enriched by, and share. Just know you brought us to tears. Thank you. 🪐✨

Alert alert! Due to the most fickle of forecasts, Sky Poems has been rescheduled from Sept 26 to Sunday Sept 27 from 2:00-4:00!!!! Tell your friends! Spread the word!

Info about the event:

Location:
821 E 35th St, Minneapolis, MN 55407
(the flag pole at the corner of 35th St and Elliot Ave)

Sky Poems is a poetry and flag-raising event that provides a space of reflection and celebrates Minneapolis in the wake of Metro Surge. Local artist and flag-maker A.P. Looze has collaborated with three local poets: award-winning poet Danez Smith, current Minneapolis Poet Laureate Junauda Petrus, and former Minneapolis Poet Laureate Heid E. Erdrich– to hand sew flags adorned with their poetry to raise up onto the flag pole at the Land Stewardship Project. Each of these poets have written in response to the violence, loss, and collective resilience of Minneapolis in response to Metro Surge, have honored community members such as Renee Good and Alex Pretti while affirming our collective strength and love for this city and place. This event is an opportunity to witness and experience these poet’s powerful and truthtelling words together in one event. Sky Poems will include readings from each of these poets and a raising of one of the poet’s poems up onto the flag pole. Each poet’s flags will fly for approximately one month.
Those attending the event are encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs to sit on, as well as any snacks or comfort items.
The event will be ASL-interpreted, and there will be access to restrooms on-site.
This project is funded through The City of Minneapolis’s Cultural District Arts Fund. by @junauda

Couldn’t let Virgo season pass without sharing the Virgo season poem from The Stars and the Blackness Between Them! ✨

I’m a Virgo rising myself and have really begun to understood how that lives in my life. How intentionality and collective care is so central to the way I move. The earthy meditative electricity of this sign. The back to school of it all season, whatever that school might be for you, elementary, college, or the school of life. Season of Persephone and the ominous beckoning of the underworld. The hermit. I hope Virgo season allowed you to take care of yourself and prepare for change.

Virgo Season

In the body, temple of sacredness within our flesh and bone.
The meticulousness of magic.
The healing in the flowers and herbs.
The toiling and the work.
The grains of life, the harvesting of perfection.
The healer and the need to heal.

I unlayer the layers. The wheat, the shaft, the stem
The harvest brings forth the elements
The ancestors of our work. Fine-tuned finesse.
The clarity of our calculations. The quality of our hearth.

Wisdom moving through the pathways of the body
The Brother who pays attention to every twitch
And movement of police and overseers
Calculating the bales of cotton until escape
And he moonwalking like a seed underground to freedom

She in the fields the sharecropper
Is the protagonist in oppression’s fairytale
A deity. A master of underworlds
She sugarcane fields and unemployment lines
She bussing yam to fufu. She tap dancing what the drums used to say

Toiling cause she understand the inherent
Perfection of her existence is healer and the ancestors are trees
