Jodie Chon (@junhee_archives) | UA | Year 1 | Design 1: ARCH 101 | Fall 2025 | Professor Molly Mason (@mollyjediknight) Project Statement: The room, “Of Roof and Ground: Implied Cohabitation” examines the intersection between ornithology, dual surfaces, and weaving circulation. By weaving, a tectonic initially developed during my midterm, human inhabitants of this room pass through three zones where interior view, auditory immersion, and exterior views are emphasized, respectively. These zones are defined by the visual porosity of the ramp’s walls and the intensity of ruled surfaces as one weaves through the structure. Ruled surfaces serve as both a system in which my circulation of weaving emerges and as acoustical surfaces. The roof components are ruled surfaces built off the modular structure, creating space for the cohabitants of the room: birds. My last curiosity is the plane that humans share with birds: our roof is their ground. For birds, a roof is where rest, interaction, and conversation happen coplanar, and such activity physically and socially reflects humans as dwelling beneath a roof. This room rethinks the parallel worlds of the two species that are so often overlooked, blurring the boundaries between human and bird inhabitation, through sight and sound. ARCH 101: Design I introduces students to critical disciplinary subjects through a sequence of inquiries that prioritize close readings, speculative translations, and tectonic assemblies.
