中秋 · Mid-Autumn

4am, near West Lake.

Dew settled on the grass. 安神养心药香 burned quietly from a small snail-shaped holder.

While I practiced painting, @tkirthik circled the lake taking stills — the mountain, the water, the last darkness before dawn.

I laid xuan paper directly on the grass and moved with a large brush, my body circling the paper as ink followed breath and sound.

Black ink against wet green grass.

The moon came last.

One circular gesture, then stop.

山静,月明。
Mountain still. Moon bright.

《听风 / 仙鹤》 · Listening to the Wind / Crane

Regent’s Park, London, 2026.

Small studies of #cranes were released into the wind. Xuan paper lifted, folded and caught in the trees, briefly becoming birds themselves.

Listening to Milam’s Crane, I painted the final red-crowned crane — 丹顶鹤 — in one continuous gesture: beak, neck, body, legs, then the wing in dry ink. Chinese Xuanzong ink meets a maroon red found in London, marking the crane’s distinctive red crown.

Turned upside down, the #everydaytang crane begins to resemble 人 — the Chinese character for “human.”

When the music ends, the gesture ends. No correction.

Reading @xiaolu_impressions ‘ Everyday Tang, I’ve been thinking about tradition not as something fixed in the past, but something kept alive through movement, adaptation and everyday life.

Art historian @readpeter007 whom I met in London, described the work as “traditional and contemporary, fixed and dynamic, calligraphic and pictorial.” Thank you, Peter, for giving words to a tension I’ve been trying to understand through painting.

Ink, music, wind, landscape.

And the crane takes flight. 🕊️🍃🌳🪾🪵✨☁️☀️

Milam composes time.
I compose space.
The wind introduces chance.
Sarah holds what passes.

An evening of tea, sound and ink in San Francisco.

For this edition of JUHNZ Rituals, we were joined by a champion erhu musician from Stanford @justinlin0204 for a special live performance — bringing the centuries-old Chinese bowed instrument into dialogue with live ink painting, a soundscape by @milam.music and a tasting of collectible white tea guided by our tea master @kazu.warhod

The erhu became a thread through the evening: its strings moving between tradition and improvisation, while ink responded to sound and the energy of the room.

Rooted in the spirit of the Chinese literati, JUHNZ explores what that tradition can feel like today: not as nostalgia, but as a living culture — tea, music, art, conversation, and ritual evolving together.

So grateful to everyone who joined and became part of the artwork.

A very special thank you to @bench.wav our host and venue, for opening their space to JUHNZ.

And a huge thank you to Chris for capturing the evening so beautifully.

Quiet Night Thoughts · 静夜思
Music by Milam
Hangzhou, 2026
Ink on paper, wooden coffee stick
21 × 29.7 cm

At sunset by 苏堤, the mountains of West Lake began to disappear.

I squint until detail dissolves. Breathe. Then move.

A wooden coffee stick becomes the brush — its tip following the rise and fall of the ridgeline, its flat edge dragging dry ink into stone and terrain. The gesture moves between mountain, body, and Milam’s music.

The moon comes last: almost no ink, only pressure and a circular trace.

Thirty studies for one quiet moment.

More shots from @juhnz.rituals in Hangzhou last year🎋

I’ve been quite obsessed in reviving the song dynasty literati aesthetic and placing it into a modern context. The literati (文人)were deeply attuned to nature - they would chill, jam, and recite poetry in pagodas in the middle of nature.

I think a lot about how the literati movement is about simplicity, nature attunement and being a free spirit wanderer which is such a contrast to modern society which is all about attention-seeking, escapism and individualism. The literati ideals are exactly what we need in this moment of time in the age of AI and algorithms.

Our first JUHNZ Rituals evening in New York.

An evening of tea, incense, art, music, and poetry.

A heartfelt thank you to Soft Hours Tea House and @theeasternphilosophy for your beautiful curation of tea and incense, and for helping create such a thoughtful space to gather.

JUHNZ has never been about recreating the past. It’s about discovering how ancient rituals can find new meaning today—through tea, art, music, and the people we share them with.

See you at the next ritual. 🍃 taken in New York City by @juniexia
