POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Serendipity is a fortunate, happy accident, while an accident simply means any event that happens by chance without intent.

While I have, for some years now, considered my professional career as being accidental, today I change my stance and embrace serendipity in all its glorious wonder!

Some years back, through my involvement with @wvcjazz & @jazzzzaj, I met the somewhat enigmatic, (though not really, once you get to know him) Gareth Richards in Penang.

Through one of our many conversations during that first encounter, he shared fond memories of his time lecturing at the University of the Philippines. It was in the course of those conversations that he mentioned many illustrious names, including an old friend named Gou De Jesus, like himself, a writer/editor/jazz lover.

So, he told me about her and he told her about me but, it wasn’t until 2023 when Gou reached out on FB about a book project on jazz in the Philippines that she was working on. She asked if I would be willing to share some stories of having grown up in a musical family. Of course I said yes. But life post-lockdown took on a frenetic pace and we both got too busy.

Fast forward to early this month when the FB chat not only suddenly sprung back to life, but earlier today - just three weeks after she reached out, she sent me the link to the finished article!

Thank you @goudejesus and @coverstoryph! I count it a privilege to be in your archive of overseas-based Pinoy jazz flag-bearers. 🙏🏼

Get @reshare_app • @coverstoryph 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗖 | Junji Delfino was singing before she could remember not singing—at 4 years old, already finding melodies, and by 10, slipping into Manila’s jazz clubs with a father who wouldn’t have known how to keep her away even if he tried.

Junji absorbed the music the way children absorb a first language: without effort, without deciding to. Decades later, that absorption would carry her across the region into another country and into a genre-blurring stage career, and eventually onto the set of one of the biggest films of the last decade.

Living The Dream

Five decades ago, I would frequently stand in front of my bedroom mirror, hairbrush handle for a mic, cassette wound up by hand to the exact point of the intro to whatever was the song of the day and I would launch into my very own concert. It was always a vision I held in my head and heart that I would live through.

Fifteen years ago, I realised that vision when I had my first concert to launch my first solo album. Thanks to my husband @davidgomes.jazz who took a shot at putting what meagre savings we had (with five school-going kids!!) and a small bank loan, behind his wife.

HERE I AM was recorded and launched over a 3-night sold out concert at PJ Live Arts with a handful of my many dear friends in KL.

In the lead up to that concert, @iamthelennard, who got roped in as my album & concert publicist by @edwinshelah who directed the show, got me a special assignment to interview @chuchovaldesmusic prior to his concert at @dewanfilharmonikpetronas. If that wasn’t huge enough of a big deal for me, David and I got two seats to the concert!

As I sat there, savouring every beat, every note, I began to envision myself standing centrestage and muttering “One day, I’ll step on that stage”. Fifteen years later, that dream manifested itself.

Last Saturday’s experience, sharing that golden moment with @wvcjazz @theshangsisters and @izenkongofficial, standing in front of the @malaysianphilharmonicorchestra under the baton of @gerardsalonga, is indelibly etched in my memory forever.

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Tay Cher Siang @jazzzzaj for inviting me to sing a couple of songs with them. Huge thanks to @ajpopshuvit & @adrielxl @eddylimyc @faridsaxo92 too. Likewise all the players in the orchestra!

And I had a lot of fun with @janetleemusic @winniehomusic @mian_vocalist & @izenkongofficial!

The marvellous audience of about 900 or so people made the whole experience so sublime and I thank you all.

But the biggest thanks will always and ever be to my Audience of One. Thank You, Lord, for Your abounding grace and blessings. All I have and all I’ll ever need flows from You. 🙏🏼

Oh,and I’ll see you back at MPO, 4th of October! WATCH THIS SPACE! by @junjidelfino

I am in awe of this precious lady! She’s 90 and she’s still ploughing through, travelling about 300 out of 365 days every year, with no PA, no entourage of people to go with her or to make her life easy while she spreads her message of hope all around the world! I’ll say it again… SHE’S 90!!!! Now let’s all just shut up and stop complaining about how tired or overworked or whatever the what we are feeling. #whenigrowupiwanttobejanegoodall by @junjidelfino

Congratulations @jeffreycheahpac on your official launch & kudos to all the many hands and voices that brought a Brand New Day to the stage last night. I don’t imagine it could’ve been an easy journey. Over a hundred people on and off stage to pull off this huge feat!

Congratulations @melissateoh & @seanwghazi, Maestro Kevin Field and each and every one of the accomplished performers on stage.

The one thing though that really struck a chord with me was not set to music but, rather, the words that Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah spoke during his opening speech. A visionary that walks his talk.

It’s evident that he is not only interested in building buildings - physical structures, an infrastructure, which no doubt are well thought out and planned. But in and around all that planning, his core belief in building up the arts and culture to open up and form the minds of the community, the people from within and around the Sunway enclave - and hopefully beyond - truly resonated deeply.

It takes a lot to educate people, to inculcate the importance of recognising and appreciating the value of arts, music and culture - not just as a means of entertainment but as a way of life. Not with book knowledge but through experiencing it first hand.

“I will aspire to inspire until I expire”, he said. And I believe he meant every word.

Thank you, Sir! by @junjidelfino

Ok, this one’s going to hit close to home. But sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.

Directed by Christopher Ling, Samuel D. Hunter’s original stage play ‘The Whale’ follows Charlie, a reclusive teacher attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughter after years apart. Raw, intimate, and deeply human, it asks whether we can ever truly make things right before time runs out.

⚠️This performance contains strong language and heavy discussions of binge eating, mental health issues, and alcohol abuse, so viewer discretion is advised⚠️)

🗓️ Thur - Sun, 17 - 20 Sep
⏰ 8:00PM (Thur - Sat), 3:00PM (Sat & Sun)
📍 Pentas 2, klpac

Why does Liz stay?

Because she cares. Because she loves Charlie. And because some bonds are too deep to walk away from.

Junji Delfino, or Nona (as her granddaughter lovingly calls her), has worked tirelessly over the last 13 years to preserve the memory of Nina’s cooking. Over many sleepless nights, she has painstakingly deciphered what’s really in a single “Nina-handful” to recreate Nina’s best hits.

To the family, Nina’s food will always call to mind memories of home and a simpler time. And we want to share the experience with you.

How many times in our lives have we avoided looking at things too painful to see? How many times have we thought of making things right? How many times have we lost hope in ourselves, in the people we love, or in the circumstances we’re in… even in humanity, as a whole? How many times have we lost the chance to make a change?

Tomorrow is not promised. All we have to work with is every single day that we are still breathing. That’s where hope resides.

Catch The Whale, 17 to 18 Sept at @theklpac.

EARLY BIRD PROMOTION LASTS UNTIL 31st AUG ONLY!
