9/25/23, 6:30( Rabbit Matsuzaka saying goodbye to his friends and family)
Part 1

It has been 10 years since we started to come to Okunoshma. I still can not forget how excited I was to see many rabbits run up to me during our first visit to this island. I just could not realize how things could deteriorate this bad in 10 years.

People poking rabbit nests with tree branches. People climbing walls where rabbit nests are and destroying them potentially killing babies. People reaching hands into rabbit nests hoping to catch them. When rabbits don’t eat the food shoved at their nose, people get frustrated and start hitting and kicking them. People chase rabbits and end up stepping on them.
Vast majority are kids doing these things while their parents ignore their behaviors. Parents are okay with kids actions as long as they have a good time.

There’s no control on the island to protect rabbits. No park rangers or people with authority. The island has only volunteers like us who tell people not to mistreat rabbits and get yelled back if we say anything.

Matsuzaka rabbit did not have to die.
He was chased and cornered by kids into the bushes where he lived, where he got stepped on and his hips were broken.
Matsuzaka was 5 years old, a very popular rabbit but not as agile as he used to be and probably could not escape this persistent chase by kids. Michael witnessed multiple chases on Matsuzaka and other rabbits and told people to stop.

(To continue to Part 2)

9/25/23, 6:30 (Rabbit Matsuzaka saying goodbye to his friends and family)
Part 2

We have come to the island many times over the years to help sick and injured rabbits. We explained to people what to do and not to do many times. Hoping that with education, people will change but nothing changed. People still chase rabbits and over feed them and rabbits end up being injured, sick and ultimately die. Even we could save one rabbit, three still died. We realized that our efforts had no impact. As Michael said, it's like trying to put out a fire in a high-rise building with a short household hose.

While many companies make profits off the rabbits, rabbits are paying with their lives. Not one yen goes to the rabbits or their care. Injured or sick rabbits as a result of human cruelty are not rescued or treated. They simply end up dying within days if not overnight. The only thing that is protected are businesses who exploites rabbits. Okunoshima became an island of animal abuse. This should never be tolerated.

I hear the rabbits voices screaming every day "Protect Me, Help Me!”

The young rabbit I named "Mr. Hand" had an injured front left leg.

For a rabbit so young, surviving on this island with an injury like that is all but impossible.

Why aren't we allowed to take such rabbits to a vet?
This is a question we ourselves have grappled with for years.

Item number 4 on the sign from that time (pic 5) stated:

Do not bring pets (animals). Do not take rabbits out.

Directly beneath that, it read:

Abandoning animals is prohibited by laws such as the Act on Welfare and Management of Animals.

This was precisely why I thought that taking a rabbit out to the hospital might also be against the law.

I vividly remember the shock I felt in June 2024—when we first took a sick rabbit (memorable rabbits part 4) off the island—upon realizing that removing the rabbits did not actually violate the law.
It felt as though I had been struck on the head by the realization that, until then, we had effectively left rabbits in need of medical care to die.

The current signage does not explicitly mention "animal abandonment"; instead, the message is conveyed via posters.

Rescuing rabbits for medical treatment is extremely difficult. This is because returning a rabbit to the island after treatment constitutes animal abandonment—a criminal offense. Consequently, a foster owner must be found to provide lifelong care. Yet, unaware of the immense challenge this entails, people flood the comment section with demands that any sick or injured rabbit be taken to a vet.

Rescuing the rabbits of Okunoshima requires a revision of current rules.

Rangetsu: 2 months after adoption

An update from Rangetsu's new family.

Dawn sprints around the room.
Food bowl tossed across the floor.
Look away for a second, and she's halfway up the stairs.

She now runs the house.

To ask for treats, she stands up with her paws on her human's back.
Blueberries from the local park, four a day. This year's harvest is almost entirely hers

When the feeder timer buzzes, she doesn't wait for the pellets to reach the bowl. She eats straight from the chute.
Patience is not yet part of her skill set.

She's grown a bit bigger, too. by @junkohiking

Austin was rescued from Ohkunoshima in December 2024. He was likely the victim of abuse and was found suffering from a severe open, complex fracture.
It’s heartbreaking to see him try to scratch his head with his missing right hind leg, but he lives perfectly well on three legs and is clearly loved by @bunnyintokyo. He handles puzzle toys with ease, too. Apparently, he’s just like any other pet rabbit. That makes sense, after all—the rabbits on Okunoshima are all domestic rabbits. 🤔 (Pics 1–4)
His housemate Bugsi tried apple puree for the first time and seemed puzzled by it (pic 5), but it was Austin who eagerly devoured the half-portion Bugsi left behind. 🤣

Memorable rabbits. Part 18 Kai chan

Kai-chan was a rabbit of great presence on Okunoshima—rivaling even Matsuzaka-san—and was also known for his longevity. Having given birth to a vast number of offspring, she was a figure who could well be described as an empress.

Born at the beach, she was a female who nonetheless relocated to the area near the swimming pool. For Kai-chan—who defied typical rabbit behavior by establishing herself as the boss despite being female—such a move may well have been a perfectly natural course of action.

She possessed an unyielding spirit; she would ruthlessly intimidate anyone who crossed her and assert her right to eat first.

Kai-chan recognized her own name and would respond whenever it was called—a sign that, in all likelihood, many people had spoken to her.

In her final years, her Pasteurella infection worsened significantly; it was obvious to anyone that she was ill. Gradually, she stopped eating.
It must have been heartbreaking for those who knew Kai-chan when she was young to see her condition in those later years. Had she been living in a home, she surely could have lived another five years.

If a day ever comes when rabbits are managed in smaller numbers, will they finally be able to receive—at the very least—basic care?

Memorable rabbits Part 17 Stephanie

The rabbit known as Stephanie was a member of a large family living at the south beach.
Her parents lived in the same territory, where they too had partners and offspring—much like a daughter bringing a mate into her family home, perhaps?
Though timid in her youth, she grew into a confident, magnificent, and beautiful mother; she was one of the lucky few rabbits who lived harmoniously alongside three or four generations of her family.

Michael spent hours every day standing at this beach, observing the rabbits interact with one another until he could identify their territorial boundaries and the relationships among them. Males would be driven out of the territory upon reaching a few months old and forced to move to a new area—a transition that sometimes resulted in failure to adapt and, consequently, death. Females, on the other hand, remained near their natal territory to raise their own families.

There were cases of couples divorcing—or separating—where the woman began living with a new husband while the former husband lived in the neighborhood.

All the rabbits on Ohkunoshima are the product of inbreeding and are related to one another; yet, there appear to be territorial rules and feuds among kin, and conflicts can escalate into extremely violent clashes.

Stephanie’s end remains a mystery. Rabbits that suddenly vanish are often sick or injured, yet Stephanie had appeared perfectly healthy. Given the recent rise in the wild boar population, however, it is possible she fell prey to one.
