#Tribute | 🇬🇧🍁 British Forces on Juno Beach
On June 6, 1944, nearly 8,000 British soldiers supported Canadian troops on Juno Beach through naval, air and artillery support. 🔗 Learn more ➡ https://bit.ly/4bnazIv
👉 Among them was Anthony Parker, Royal Engineers.
On the morning of June 6, 1944, Anthony Parker landed on Juno Beach with the Royal Engineers. As soon as he reached the beach, Anthony and his comrades began clearing a path through the minefields. Despite the gunfire and explosions all around them, they focused on their mission: detecting and clearing mines so that troops and vehicles could advance.
🌺 After leaving Juno Beach, Anthony Parker continued his service, taking part in mine clearance, bridge building and fighting until the end of the war. He then remained in the British Army for 31 years, eventually retiring as a Warrant Officer with the Royal Engineers.

#TemporaryExhibition | In our temporary exhibition “My Childhood, 1939–1945”, we learn that Canadian children also played a role in the war effort!
👉 During the war, Canadian children actively contributed by collecting materials such as metal, paper and even bones, which were used to make glue or fertilizer.

On June 6, 1944, nearly 8,000 British soldiers supported Canadian troops on Juno Beach through naval, air and artillery support. 🔗 Learn more ➡ https://bit.ly/4bnazIv
👉 Among them was Patrick Samuel Churchill, a Royal Marine signaller with the 2nd Royal Marines Armoured Support Regiment.
He landed at Courseulles-sur-Mer, in the Nan Green sector, as part of T Troop. His Landing Craft Tank carried two Centaur tanks, ammunition sleds and armoured vehicles. On board were also Canadian soldiers from the Regina Rifles. As his tank reached the beach, a nearby shell caused the ammunition inside to tumble across the tank ; by
some miracle, none of them landed tip-first. Once ashore, Churchill helped prepare the tanks for action against German defences inland.️
🌺 Patrick Samuel Churchill returned to Normandy many times after the war to remember those who did not come home. He died in 2018, aged 95, shortly after his final visit.

🇨🇦 In honour of their uncle, 82 years later
A few days ago, we had the pleasure of welcoming Gordon and Catherine Young to the Juno Beach Centre.
👉 They were in Normandy to pay tribute to their uncle, John Douglas Young, who was killed on June 6, 1944, while serving with the 13th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery. His name is listed on the Bayeux Memorial, as he has no known grave.
🌺 William H. Young, John’s brother, had himself served during the Second World War in Italy. The loss of his brother had a profound impact on him. He chose to support the museum both as an individual donor and through The Young Fund, Hamilton Community Foundation.
💙 Today, Gordon and Catherine are continuing this connection with Normandy and with the memory of their uncle.
John Douglas Young will soon be among the Canadians honoured on the future Juno Beach Centre Memorial. More information: https://campaign.junobeach.org/donate/monument by @junobeachcentre
