It was really hard looking for a cheap facial moisturizer in Thailand. I didn’t bring mine thinking I’d just buy one when I got here. In the US I just use a $6 Eucerin. They’re generous also to put 50 SPF in there, doubles as a sunscreen. It’s what I use every morning.

Or maybe it’s because she didn’t know what “moisturizer” meant. When I wanted to buy “hand sanitizer,” we tried looking for it for a good few minutes until I was scolded “why didn’t you just say ‘alcohol’?”

In one of the many 7-Elevens that makeup the complexion of this country, like Duane Reade in NYC, but nicer. They are everywhere, and instead of Slurpees, they have Thai Tea, at the ready in the dispenser, muddy orange drinks, which at first I found saccharine, then grew to be obsessed. I must’ve gotten it dozens of times.

Eventually we found a tiny vial of facial moisturizer that I bought for close to $30 that I stopped using after a couple days. I realized I didn’t need it. It is so humid here. Like all the time.

I have really dry eyes, dry enough for my inner eyelids to cause corneal abrasions just by opening and closing my eyes weird sometimes. Embodiment of self destructiveness. I guess.

In fact, it had just happened this past week, three days before my flight. I had to go to the emergency eye clinic at Mount Sinai on 14th and 2nd, sat in the waiting room for 4-5 hours, in pain and squeezing in eye drops every few minutes.

“I’m going to Thailand on Friday,” I said, and I could see the ophthalmologist wanting to tell me that’s a bad idea, with my eye in this condition, then choosing to hold prescribing a change in my travel itinerary. Instead wished me happy travels.

My body generally has had dry tendencies, and in the US I’d find various remedies, like copious amounts of eye drops or facial moisturizers. All of which I stopped after a few days here.

It is always warm and moist, the food spicy and hot, which runs my nose and waters my eyes. by @junoroome

I moved to a new neighborhood last summer and one of the first times I went to the local park to play basketball it was fenced off. I’m not a quitter so I climbed the fence and hopped it, then I remembered I didn’t have my ball on me. There was Victoria, on the other side of the fence, and I asked to borrow her ball, then helped her hop to my side of the fence. We played a game of horse and she schooled me. We’d been friends ever since. These were all taken by her 🫶🏻 @veek.toria
