Uhm I guess I've never done a get to know me.

So here we go!

- Cathern really is my name. It's old Irish. And no, I've never met anyone with the same name. My parents liked unique names and so do I!

- I used to hate reading when I was young. I really had to fight hard to learn to read. Now, I can't get enough!
.
-I read whatever I feel like reading
.
-My taste ranges from YA Fantasy to Nonfiction to Hisotrical Fic to vintage mysteries.

- I'm on a garden journey and learning to grow produce 🌾
.
- I write and live seasonally. Fall and winter are creativity and planning seasons, spring and summer are busy and full of gardening and outdoor work.

- I'm part Italian so I'm always trying to feed people. You will see random cooking updates in my stories 😄

- I work at a library when I'm not reading, cooking or gardening.
.
- I'm from Ohio but I fell in love with a man from rural Pennsylvania and moved to PA to marry him!

- I got married in the mountains of Glacier National Park because my husband and I decided before we started dating that was the dream location to elope.

My husband and I live on a ridge in PA and I absolutely love it. The view is always beautiful 😍

- I LOVE Gaurdians Baseball, Ohio State Buckeyes Football, and holding the Cleveland Browns accountable for our seasonal depression 😄

- I love vintage items, thrifting, garage sales, flowers, traveling, a fresh snow, a summer breeze, and all things autumn.
.
- I'm a dreamer to a fault: I once bought a bag of old black and white photos from an antique shop because I hated the idea of the memories being forgotten 😭😭

- I will absolutely romanticize my life, I only get 1, so why not?

- I'll never be a minimalist. I'm tidy but doomed to donate regularly

BOOK REVIEW

WASHINGTON: A LIFE
By Ron Chernow

My 2nd book in my US history series (focused on Presidencies)
Chernov writes in a thorough and eloquent way that is easy to understand for any curious reader on George Washington.
🐎
A couple things that really struck me were:
🐎
- the way George and Martha truly loved each other and were the perfect complimentary match, as described by everyone, and when he passed, she was truly inconsolable.
- He was extremely fatherly, in all the gentle and stern ways a young wayward, and certainly rebellious country needed.
- He appeared to not think twice about owning slaves until he was fighting for independence and then, as if by revelation, he was a staunch supporter of abolition along with many other founding fathers. He wanted badly to free his slaves, but he couldn't find a way that worked in their favor, did not bankrupt him and others, and didn't leave his wife destitute after he passed. Chernov's ability to explain the weight of this situation at the time for Washington and our country I found most helpful and complete. I feel I better understand the scope of its magnitude with 2026 eyes- rather than blind rage for 1700s decisions that 2026 me would have previously thought simple.

Some Fun Facts:
-George spent some time in Barbados and had a terrible time, catching sickness after sickness while there. BUT that later made him immune to much of the sickness passed around his soldiers during his tenure of service to the Crown and to the Revolutionary Army. Providence?
-In 1780 George wrote to Benedict Arnold (then at West Point) and told him he was coming for a visit, detailing his travel itinerary. He had no idea Benedict had been giving secrets to the British for quite some time already and by absolute Providence, his letter (detailing who he was visiting and which inns he would stay in) was delayed -- thus narrowly avoiding a shift in the entire outcome of our history! (talk about a what if question!)
- George refused to break up slave families, to a point that he suffered financially to keep families together. At the time of his death... (cont.) taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @just.cathern

I'm all for goals in the New Year, its one of my favorite parts of this season! But if 2025 was a rough one its ok to take a breather and reset/heal/repair. You can set a goal for yourself on literally any day of the year.

The Ride Paul Revere and the Night that Saved America

Uhm did you know there's a lot more to Paul Revere's ride??
.
The 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is right around the corner in 2026. Being a lover of history, I couldn't resist this book when I saw it come across my desk at the library. One of my favorite eras to study is the American Revolution.
.
Paul Revere was well known which made him the *perfect* person to take a the now famous ride to warn the right people. More people heard him and also took rides warning others and yet others went further, a ripple effect that took riders as far as Connecticut and Philadelphia. The patriots had weapons and gunpowder hidden in Concord and Lexington AND John Hancock and Samuel Adams were in Lexington at a parsonage.

During a thrilling stretch Paul Revere was captured by British officers on his way to Concord! Revere, Adams and Hancock were well known to the British and would be a great round up of treasonous agitators. Having all three hung for treason would be demorilazing to the cause and a great way to extingush this rebellion once and for all. Revere didn't even lie to save his life; he told them exactly who he was and what he was doing. His huberis and certainty seemed arrogant but then eventually unnerved them. The officers were so prepared to be rid of him that he was put under armed guard as they rode on horseback back to Lexington, one officer telling the other, "if he insults you, shoot him."

Buuuut the closer they got to Lexington the more evident the tension in town got to them. Finally Militiamen fired off a few rounds to rouse their fellow compatriots in the surrounding countryside, alarming the officers so much they actually let Revere go! �

Two little country mice🐭🐭 took a little adventure this week to @cupboardmakerbooks in Harrisburg! We explored their stacks and admired the cute foster cats. 🐈🐈‍⬛ We will definitely be back!

Loved our little visit, the murals were so neat outside and the mini works of art inside were so cool too!
