To my father, my guardian angel, and a person who changed the lives of so many. On today, we celebrate the life you lived and the journey you have taken thereafter. After 10 long years without you here, I finally feel the courage to share a little bit of your greatness.

You are the reason I push to be greater, to be smarter, to be stronger, to show kindness even when it isn’t returned, to forgive those who have caused me pain, to put family first but stand firm on my boundaries, to give respect where respect is given, to be open to learning, to show curiosity to nature, to take accountability, and to love myself unconditionally.

Sometimes, I catch myself staring in the mirror trying to find glimpses of you in myself to make sure you’re still with me. But you grew me in good stock, and nurtured me with love and grace, so you will always be a part of me. While I wish we had more time, I can say that you accomplished more than most and never wasted ANY of it. There was never a dull moment, and every new adventure was more exciting than the last. You were a father who prioritized being present, even if that meant having Alex and I color at the nurses station while you delivered a baby next door, or even face-timing from the hospital to see our piano recitals.

So with ALLLL that being said, today I would like to wish my father the happiest heavenly birthday. Today will always be your day, here in body, or here in spirit, we will celebrate you. I pray one day, when I’ve accomplished 1/2 as much as you did, I look at my smile in the mirror and see yours looking back instead, proud of the woman I have become.
