#iamjanedoe and I was 21 when Title IX failed me, too.

Scared, confused as hell, distraught, and in shock I sat only two days later in the title ix office, telling every horrific detail as my heart pounded out of my chest.

I’ve reread the report numerous times since then.
Only in the past few years have I read it without scouring my statement looking for inaccuracies, desperately hoping that somehow I had made it up.

I felt so guilty when I reported him, that I had him over for dinner a month after it happened and I told him I forgave him. I thought I was wrong for speaking up, that I made his life harder, and that my “sinfulness” was why god let this happen to me.

I’m so grateful that I have grown to be friends with my anger. That I no longer feel responsible for his depravity. That I don’t subscribe to beliefs that make women unsafe.

Suspension and a workshop didn’t do anything. He stayed in town and I would see him everywhere. I’d run and hide in my car and sob. It never stopped him from keeping our friends, it never stopped him from graduating from Arkansas, and it never kept him from getting a job.

The title ix loophole allows this to happen. It’s the HR of college campuses; working in protection of a financial entity rather than a justice system for the individual.

When I think of home, I think of you. And not just because we live together (although that helps). You are my “what’s for dinner”, my “do you want me to move your laundry?”, my “let’s watch a movie”, and my “will you come tan my back?”. Every meal we cook together, every house project we’ve attempted, every porch wine hang - they’re all the little things that are better with you.

Our late twenties have been full of laughter, tears, wins, losses, grief, joy, heartbreaks and new loves, and through it all we’ve just kept saying “at least we have each other.”

I am so lucky to have a best friend-sister-domestic partner-roommate in you. I am so proud of you and the woman that you are, and I’m grateful for the ways you’ve made me a better woman. I love you so much.🥹
