Babyyyy!!!! The way I randomly scream “Go Mary! Go Mary!” at the most inopportune times is kinda crazy.😭😭 Them shoulders was LOOSE you hear mee!!😂 In my karaoke days, this was absolutely my go to. I was gonna skip this post. For so many reasons. Number 1 on that list is my fear of being vulnerable on the internet. I could barely get through it and I was so mad at myself afterwards because I had so many dope little riffs and runs planned for it. When it came down to recording it, I knew I had to connect to it first before I executed… that’s when the lyrics hit me. After this week my posts might slow down a bit… I’m starting to do this for the validation again and that’s the opposite of why I started. The judgements are flooding in and my second guessing everything I sing now.. re-recording and throwing away perfectly good takes; afraid it won’t match the momentum of that one viral video. It was never about that. I’ve scheduled my posts out for the next few days… I may drop music… we’ll see how that goes. Til then… please enjoy the content. “Clap twice and tell your neighbor to tap in. For those of you who don’t know me I’m an advocate for 2 things…” Ugh. I miss performing so much. I mean don’t get me wrong, it’s literally my job and I get to do it 6 times a week. Definitely a blessing but it’s not the same as performing my own music in front of people who just enjoy R&B/Soul. I use to do this mash up to give people insight to who I am as a person and a creative. For time sake I had to cut most of the video but this is the meat and potatoes. If you’ve ever felt like you were isolated or misunderstood…trust me when I say I’ve been there. Hell I still toggle in and out of it most days. I’ve learned to lean into self, lean on God, and lean into community. Knowing when it’s internal and when it’s external is where it starts because only one of those things in within your control. Before you ask, it’s called “Brokenhearted” and it’s not out.😭 Yall I promise I don’t just write sad girl music… I just so happen to be reaaallly good at it. There’s so much depth in longing. In heartbreak.. in brokenness.. honestly it use to be the one constant feeling in my life. Like I created a comfort zone around it or like it became the soundtrack to it. This particular song was derived from someone else’s situation…coupled with a bit of empathy for my own. Their relationship and my friendship, coexisting yet dying at the same time. Of course… leave it to me to foreshadow my own relationships down fall except… now I’m writing from the perspective of a man I fell head over heels in love with, as well as my own. Crazy how you can be so afraid of being hurt that you become the villain in your own story. I’m at a place where I can sing this without bursting into tears but… they’re never far behind. This song use to make me cry so baaad y’all. I don’t know how but SOMEHOW, my most heartfelt songs are always foreshadows. Normally I can’t write without the experience to draw from but sometimes I get these gut feelings of things I’ve never dealt with and I have to write about it. Then it happens. So needless to say I’m very careful about what I write these days. 😂 After realizing I was NOT warm AT ALL in the middle of the song… I had to commit to finishing it.😭 this was my third attempt so I couldn’t do it again. I normally cut these parts out before posting, but this was so important to me to leave in because of how often I have these conversations with self. Okay so listen… my biggest struggle is belting and staying in key. I have way more control over my pitch when I’m quieter. Most times when I’m belting I’m worried about the song being FELT more than anything; which leads me to hollin’ more than singing with intentional volume. I’m still trying to figure out the balance which is how this happened. I wasn’t worried about how anyone else felt about the sound other than myself. Like driving a car, riding a bike or fishing… there’s a certain Eb n Flow to this that I’m figuring out.
