Francisco Silva ✨ (@justforfun.inc) é um jovem fotógrafo (24 anos) baseado em Lisboa (os anjos existem malta!)

Não o conhecíamos de lado nenhum. Enviou-nos ontem estas chapas que tirou no concerto de Adoro Protocolo + Parque Império, nos Jardins do Bombarda, no Sábado passado, 4 de Julho. E que grandes chapas! Se começou por ser “justforfun”, a verdade é que há aqui muito talento.

A principal missão do Festival Emergente é apoiar o talento emergente português, pelo que fica aqui a partilha das fotos do Francisco, de duas bandas cuja garra e atitude ele captou de forma impressionante e iluminada. Não será alheio à qualidade destas fotos o trabalho da Rita Conde 💫 (@_esconde_) responsável pela iluminação da bela Sala Estúdio Valentim de Barros.

Inside the new bar @afechada, with @joly.bmore and @leeshortforleee

Joly 🎤 this Monday's jazz singer, came to Portugal almost by chance. She initially gave herself three months. Three years later, she is still here.

Her experience in Lisbon, beyond exposing her to many new genres, has exposed her to the ins and outs of building a musical career in a small, largely self-organised scene.

In her view, there are too few promoters, intermediaries and networking spaces connecting artists, venues and audiences.

As a result, musicians often depend on their own grit, personal connections and pre-existing following.

- Best case scenario, this can lead to creative freedom between artists and venues, especially when venues have well established internal promotion channels.

- Worst case, the entire promotion of a show might amount to one post... perhaps a Story.

Lee 🍺 A Fechada's owner, approaches the same issue from the side of the host.

After also giving Lisbon a chance, and soon finding a community of filmmakers and musicians, he spent years organising Short Film Sundays (a great topic for another post) and an open mic at La Sharada.

When La Sharada closed, he jokingly called the next iteration, at a different venue:

“La Fechada — the post-mortem La Sharada experience.”

The name stuck.

For Lee, Lisbon has no shortage of talented and approachable musicians. What it lacks are accessible spaces in the city: places people can walk to, buy an affordable drink and hear live music.

There is, he says, a large gap between performing in a café or cultural space with almost no sound equipment or lighting, and reaching the larger venues that have all of it.

A Fechada occupies part of that gap: a Lynchian basement in Arroios where live music, film and small artistic communities meet almost every night.
