Horace Duncan 9.27.2017-9.16.2024 My sweet boy is gone. I have written words on Horace’s GoFundMe should you wish to read them about what brought this agonizing decision to us. My Horace loved sprinklers and snow and climbing mountains and the field—the deck—not so much the porch and the big tree on Genesee and his big love (Olive) and Derek and my mama and my pop and my sis and my besties and every stick and piles of leaves and empty bottles and every cat he ever saw and howling and show-tunes and open windows and suckling and tennis balls and snuggling and crisp air and chicken and hide and seek and mangoes and gloves and me. If you are wondering —Horace loved you, too. He has been and will remain my greatest joy and every moment I imagine that contains awe and curiosity and grace he is there gentle and present and sniffing the air in wonder. —————————————- “I Ask Percy How I Should Live My Life” by Mary Oliver Love, love, love, says Percy. And hurry as fast as you can along the shining beach, or the rubble, or the dust. Then, go to sleep. Give up your body heat, your beating heart. Then, trust. ———————————- by @justicechickens

Be a blessing to somebody. by @justicechickens
For Horace. “For I will consider my dog Percy” by Mary Oliver For I will consider my dog Percy. For he was made small but brave of heart. For if he met another dog he would kiss her in kindness. For when he slept he snored only a little. For he could be silly and noble in the same moment. For when he spoke he remembered the trumpet and when he scratched he struck the floor like a drum. For he ate only the finest food and drank only the purest of water, yet would nibble of the dead fish also. For he came to me impaired and therefore certain of short life, yet thoroughly rejoiced in each day. For he took his medicines without argument. For he played easily with the neighborhood’s bull mastiff. For when he came upon mud he splashed through it. For he was an instrument for the children to learn benevolence upon. For he listened to poems as well as love-talk. For when he sniffed it was as if he were being pleased by every part of the world. For when he sickened he rallied as many times as he could. For he was a mixture of gravity and waggery. For we humans can seek self-destruction in ways he never dreamed of. For he took actions both cunning and reckless, yet refused always to offer himself to be admonished. For his sadness though without words was understandable. For there was nothing sweeter than his peace when at rest. For there was nothing brisker than his life when in motion. For he was of the tribe of Wolf. For when I went away he would watch for me at the window. For he loved me. For he suffered before I found him, and never forgot it. For he loved Anne. For when he lay down to enter sleep he did not argue about whether or not God made him. For he could fling himself upside down and laugh a true laugh. For he loved his friend Ricky. For he would dig holes in the sand and then let Ricky lie in them. For I often see his shape in the clouds and this is a continual blessing. by @justicechickens
Only joy and love from Horace, always. Only gentleness and goodness. He was so pleased to be here and with you, with me. Thank you to all of you who donated and spread the word and checked in this whole year. You made me believe I could be seen and still loved. And especially to @mauragraceathari @brine.box @the_emily_jones @meredithgarretson @mariannerendon @lutz_o and @haleyrawson who offered love and care and cars and time. Thank you to @julianelijahmartinez @k8beastman @jonathanldent @brine.box @the_emily_jones for caring for him when he was just a pup during a time I could not disclose how deeply I appreciated your help. We needed you and you were there. To the cast and crew of Illyria too. @naianaianaian @easternwestern @classicdecoy and the boys. You were first witness to my love of him and witness of his perfect goodness. I loved coming off stage to him sweetly sitting in the dressing room. And most of all to my family @duncanjane @mrginsenberger @katelynd_jane and my love @_derekwilson for carrying me through it all. by @justicechickens

I thought this deserved some more time to reflect upon it. One of my favorite poems from one of my favorite poets. The Wild Iris by Louise Glück. See you in the great fountain. ❤️ I would not have arrived to see those deep blue shadows on azure seawater without you @themauragrace —I love you deeply and forever. Thank you Melena for hearing us. And to every victim of intimate partner violence and DV; I am for you, I see you, I love you. by @justicechickens
The sweetest boy is back home. A little worse for wear but here and willful as always. We’re adjusting to the new normal and hopeful his full eyesight, focus and gait will return. We have a long medication filled journey ahead but we will figure it out. We always do. I am so incredibly grateful to my community and the people connected to my community who have shown us such love. I am forever in your debt. We need each other, that much is clear. Please continue to share Horace’s story and GoFundMe with anyone you know who may be able to help— we’re so close to our goal. I love you. I thank you. And Horace will lovingly kiss you when next he sees you as always. by @justicechickens
