⏱️ October 10, Saturday!
📍Brandywine Workshop and Archives
730S Broad St, Philadelphia, PA

Design Philadelphia X BWA

Alexis Nutini (@dos_tres_press ) will lead a woodcut printmaking workshop, inviting guests to print directly onto their own clothing or textile using a custom woodblock. Ink will be provided; however, textiles will not be provided. Participants who would like to take part in the woodcut workshop must bring their own textile to print. Guests are encouraged to bring a favorite cotton item from home; a denim jacket, pair of jeans, scarf, tote bag, cotton pants, skirt, or another cotton textile, and personalize it with a custom woodblock print created at Brandywine Workshop and Archives.

Justine K. Ditto (@justine.ditto ) will lead a monotype printmaking workshop, guiding participants through the process of creating an original, one-of-a-kind work on paper. Paper and ink will be provided for all participants. Guests will have an opportunity to experiment with the spontaneity of monotype while creating their own print to take home.

No previous printmaking experience is necessary. Refreshments will be served.

“Cosmic Landscape” @justine.ditto I was first introduced to lithography via Ron Wyffels in my undergraduate studies at PAFA. I immediately fell in love with drawing on stones. It’s such a sculptural way of drawing that makes you approach the image from different and interesting ways. I especially loved counter-etching and reworking an image multiple times.

“Phasing” @justine.ditto I was introduced to Peter Haarz in Ron’s class and worked as a press assistant at Petrichor Press for a while during college. Ron and Peter encouraged me to attend Tamarind, which I did in 2019. Now I get to professionally work as a collaborative printer myself. @peter.haarz @petrichorpress @ronwyffels @tamarindinstitute @pafacademy @pafaprint

“Ancient Portal” @justine.ditto As a printmaker I deal in objects. These objects yield remnants or impressions – the print itself is a kind of artifact existing as a testament to the mystique of the object. I see the act of art-making as artifact-making, as if I were a contemporary troglodyte leaving my tools and evidence for later peoples to discover and deem as relics to be coveted. This same interest translates into my subject-matter. I generally depict architectural structures, terrains, and map-like diagrams/charts. I feel that the terms object, artifact, and monument can be interchangeable conceptually in the sense that they have an artful uselessness – a utility that applies only in the intellectual sense – and a powerful, almost figurative presence. I want the objects and structures I create to have this sense of depth and a kind of ambiguity that allows multiple meanings. My images are influenced by ancient and modern architecture, astronomic and microscopic forms, landscape and organic processes, and constructs from imagination. I like to seek out the crossover between natural and man-made – where the conglomerate product has a unique multiplicity or mystery. When constructing fantastical landscapes, I’m chasing the mystical essence that comes from the energy, shapes, symbols, and near personhood that we bring to our environments.
