27th April 2026 - the first hearing in the high court for the River Wye, Lugg & Usk pollution claim. Great to have so much media and press attention for this landmark case. It goes to show how fed up people are with raw sewage, intensive chicken waste and other toxins being released into our rivers, lakes and seas across the country. Effective legislation and regulation is desperately needed and there are a number of charities campaigning hard for this.

This legal case isn’t just important for the Wye, Usk and Lugg but for rivers, lakes and coastal seas across the UK. It is the largest environmental pollution claim in UK history and is helping drive real change in policy, regulation and enforcement. So many people have been working tirelessly to get the message out that are natural water systems are in real trouble. Make the polluters pay to clean up and demand that our water systems are properly protected in the future. It’s been a long time coming! The lawsuit has been filed in the high court this week by @leighday_law against Avara Foods Ltd, Freeman’s of Newent Ltd and Welsh Water accusing them of extensive and wild spread pollution of The Wye, Usk and Lugg rivers. There is a very good article on the BBC website about it https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crrj4qqqy7po …..And in many of the mainstream UK newspapers and TV outlets. The lawsuit comes on the back of years of tireless work by citizen-scientists, charities such as @riveractionuk and the local community. Thanks to @leighday_law for bringing this case to court and putting it in the spotlight. Close on 4000 people have signed up as claimants so far, making it the biggest ever UK lawsuit over environmental pollution. by @justineevans02

This is one of the pictures of Jane that captivated me the most when I was a little girl. Here she was, a young woman from Bournemouth who travelled to Africa to follow her passion and immerse herself in wildlife. What an inspiration she was! As I grew older I learnt more about her work, the quiet determination to change the way we view animals, the empathy for all life, the energy and ideas to create projects that make the world a better place. In my first term at film school in Bournemouth I found her address and, with a few other students, knocked on the door. Her mother Vanne answered and with great grace invited us all in for tea. Of course Jane was away working/campaigning but Vanne talked to us for hours about her beneath a huge National Geographic photograph of Jane in the sitting room. I remembered feeling so excited, I wanted to follow this amazing woman to far away places and film the mysterious wildlife that lived there. Jane returned to Bournemouth a few weeks later and we met up at Monkey World, an ape rescue centre in Dorset. She asked me to help her with some local talks and run the projector - this was 1989 so everything was on film slides and I was so honored to be asked. At the first talk she spoke quietly and calmly about chimpanzees until the moment she demonstrated the pant hoot. My goodness I was blown away, how could that incredible sound come from such a small slender person. The volume and power left everyone speechless and at that moment I realised what deep, confident strength she held within her. In the years that followed she supported so many conservation organisations, set up Roots & Shoots and The Jane Goodall Legacy Foundation and tirelessly campaigned for the rights of all wildlife including us humans. She was a guiding light for me as she was for so many and she lives on through all those she inspired. Donations can be made to The Jane Goodall Institute @janegoodallinst by @justineevans02

A selection of behind the scenes pics from our harpy eagle shoot in Venezuela that is now showing in the Amazon episode of The Americas on @bbciplayer An amazing and powerful bird, the biggest bird of prey in The Americas and one of the largest in the World. Look at the size of the leg ring required to fit those enormous pins! It was a tough but very rewarding shoot, Venezuela is politically and economically a very troubled country and yet there are people like @alexanderblancomarquez making a huge impact when it comes to wildlife protection. As Alexander says, it takes many many years working with the local communities to make a difference and what a difference he has made when it comes to harpy eagle protection. We had a great team: @nikki.waldron heading up everything as producer @helen.hobin co-cinematographer and drone too. Aidan Chitty keeping us safe on the ropes. The photo of him in full riot gear protection was a precaution for the first time he climbed the tree near the harpy nest. Johnny Crockett filming behind the scenes and Freddie Vergara @freddyvergarac our amazing fixer and location manager.
