Last semester, I had the pleasure and privilege of delivering my first guest lecture in Gov 10: Foundations of Political Philosophy titled “W.E.B. Du Bois on Racial Liberalism & Its Limits.”

Gov 10 is one of Harvard’s most popular courses, made up of roughly 10% of Harvard’s freshman class. For most students, it was their introduction to Du Bois and black political thought, more broadly.

The weight of this moment felt staggering. It was my first time ever teaching. I searched for an excuse to not follow through, particularly given the political climate we’re in. But I did it. And it was beyond rewarding.

While the Freedmen’s Bureau is fondly remembered in our collective memory as an institution that catalyzed unbridled black freedom, my first legal academic article reckons with how Freedmen’s Bureau courts’ adoption of nineteenth-century contract jurisprudence legitimated exploitative labor relations between freedmen and white planters. I’m incredibly grateful for peers and mentors who provided feedback on earlier drafts. If you’re interested in reading more, it’s available on justinlbrooks.com. #onestepcloser by @justinlamar

It’s been a joy being back on the yard. And it was an honor to be invited to the Harvard Law School Bell Collective’s 2024 Critical Race Theory (CRT) Conference. I spoke about the social and intellectual history of critical race theory & the importance of building a bridge between CRT & Black Studies—to read Morrison, Mills, Du Bois, Hartman, and Sexton alongside legal theory. Incredibly grateful to Crenshaw & Perry for their historical work and cross-disciplinary theorization. Forever indebted to ancestor Derrick A. Bell for his endless sacrifices. Thank you, @hlscrt. by @justinlamar
