The original Beast Dreams were some of the most popular pieces from Facets. I wanted to see how they’d adapt to having an extra dimension introduced into their lives for Facets II. Most coped quite well. Relatively.

Facets is back 💎

As I prepare to step into my next creative season, I needed to first show some love and honor and respect to the projects that have shaped my path.

To that end I have redesigned the FACETS website from the ground up. I wanted to build a simple, beautiful space where you can easily browse and download all of the work for free.

I’ve also assembled curation notes, personal memories, and the music that soundtracked each bodyof work. You can now browse by year and filter by Series to get the backstory on the art.

First up: “Beach Dreams” (2013)
Coming out of a long cold winter in Brooklyn, I was missing the warmth of an Australian summer. These compositions are collages of shapes I modelled in C4D then rendered in Bryce 3D, which I used longer than any other human being on the planet.

🎵 Soundtrack: “Wakin on a Pretty Day” – Kurt Vile

Talk to me. Is this connection or isolation? Is it building towards something more, or just spinning up greasy worn down gears of the past? I welcome your thoughts. by @justinmaller

More explorations and meditations. Twenty five years of this now. Still trying to find unexplored ways of working.

Thank you for all the kind words on the latest set of work, it was so lovely to hear from you all again. I look forward to your thoughts on this work <3 by @justinmaller

The first new art I’ve shared in quite some time. Searching for something… else? Something I have never made before, something I haven’t quite seen before…

A fresh start? A new direction? in this strangest of times. Please tell me what you think of this work. I have more to share. by @justinmaller

Still thinking about @depthcore / #metalheart since @mike_sunday’s post last week. There’s such a huge archive of this stuff. 25 years later, we might be approaching time for institutions to revisit this very unique chapter in digital art.

Most of this work made 2002 - 2007 for DC. The funnest era, hands down. by @justinmaller

Some work from the early 00’s for @depthcore - Gen Z calls this style “#Metalheart” - we just called it 3D abstract.

@mike_sunday’s recent awesome reel on the style brought up my favourite point - this was digital arts first truly original style. Always been proud to be a small part of that. by @justinmaller

Some lost artefacts from Facets… I can’t tell if I was losing my mind making a piece a day and this work is junk or if there was something worthwhile in this approach? by @justinmaller
