Dearest Good Sir, Oh, how I love you. I did not expect to wake up and find you gone. I went to greet you, and when I saw your lifeless but still radiant body, I fell to the ground with you. Crestfallen. Curled in a ball of raw adolescence and concrete soaked tears. You licked my face every day — like last night when I was already sad and confused — and it was always a lick imbued with love and adoration. A consistency that cannot be matched by most humans. You did not signal distress to me, you just left for the firmament in a momentous flash. You were so acutely aware of everything around you. You had a boundless and abiding sense of every inch of my movement. The way you stared at the kids, hunting for further moments of bliss and companionship. You weren’t the easiest, to be sure — your anxiety, your yelping need, your every attention to detail, often so much to bear. I could feel every existential yearning in your eyes. And I did everything I could every day to ease those tense moments when the world was busied about you, swirling dizzily with that uncertain ease. You were a bright, bold, and beautiful boy. Your spirit was contagious, and your ears pointed high to the sun, like shooting stars of auditory devotion. They were your love beacons. I am learning in countless ways that the world takes from us with reckless abandon. It doesn’t ask for permission. It doesn’t often prepare us with runways of grace and warm blankets of notice or care. The darkness comes, and it is only how you embrace it. But, indeed, Buddy, my dearest best friend, I found warmth in your translucent coat. A coat that will forever remain enshrined within me. For as the world has taken you, so too have you taken me. Two leagues in one season was altogether too much on us, Austin. You made two All Star teams in a single season and handled everything with grace. I am so very proud of you, especially as you inject your positivity into everything you do, regardless of the outcome. You allow me to see all of the faults inside of me, as I sit there and melt down silently in the stands, running through every scenario. I humbly suggested on the ride over that you smash one into the outfield, and you delivered. You sort of always do, not just with baseball. You looked at me from the base path with that look: “you happy?” Yes. But not for the reason you think. It isn’t about the hits you make. It’s about the hits you take. And I’ll keep taking more of them for you as I grow old, even when it hurts. ⚾️💙 taken in Pacific Park by @justinreade
