Old ghost ultra 2021

Months of training went into that. ‘On the day’ pictures and stories reflect such a tiny part of the journey there.

For the first time in my life I was running 5 times a week, usually more than 6 hours, different routes, getting as strong as I could. I would run before or after night shifts, in the mornings after finishing work in the small hours of the night and for the majority of my days off.

Squeezing in that much running was never sustainable long term but the whole experience gave me a whole new perspective of what I can do with consistency and determination. I’ll try to always remember it.

1st: my favourite picture from the race
2nd: 2 days after the race going for a gentle spin on the mountain bike. I took a photo in a moment of maximum respect for my body
3rd: my plan for the race on the side of a cardboard box for Matt, Laura and North to guess when I’d be seeing them again
4th. A photo from Atomic Habit with a poignant learning point that will stick with me.

At this point it may well stay as #justoneultra but we will see. by @justoneultra

Old Ghost Ultra 2021
Finale:

Emily and I trotted into the final aid station with 18km left after around 11 hours of moving.
We came across lots of familiar faces from other times in the race and had a brief sit down, quickly shared some bandages for an elbow and on we went.

We developed a system of running a few kms then walking one. At this time it was so hard to keep moving, everything in me told me to walk, I’ve done enough, nothing bad will happen if I walk. But thankfully Emily was there to pull me along.

We reached the finish line in a time I thought was impossible as I started that long descent by myself.
Managed to move 85km through the mountains in one day. One of the best days ever.

Instead of filming the final finish I pocket filmed the aftermath.
