It’s 6x6 time! It’s birthday time! It’s summertime!
🎨
The start of June not only brings my birthday, but it’s also the start of 6x6, Rochester’s most exciting community art exhibit at @roco137! Back in March, I hosted an art making party in my studio, and now, we get to see our work on the walls alongside 6000+ others! Tonight I’m celebrating my birthday with a jaunt around the city for First Friday. It’s such a thrill each year, and knowing it helps raise funds for a pillar in the Rochester arts scene, is the icing on my birthday cake. The show runs through July 25th, and makes for a perfect summer (air-conditioned) activity.
🌎
My submission this year is entitled “Earth: so below”, made from scrap mat board, Japanese and marbled paper, along with some finger lakes sand. I also created a companion piece, “Space: as above”. I love this kind of dimensional work, which allow my mind to travel through different planes and imagine new perspectives. Fresh from a screening of Project Hail Mary, and ripe with anticipation of the Artemis 2 launch, I was lost in thoughts of the depths of space and the imprints of humans. How we see our sky, and how the sky sees us, are windows with different viewers. I loved the construction and engineering of these; each triangle created provided me with reflection time without distraction. I was in a real flow state while making these!
💫

{Earth has sold, No. 4182, Space is available in-studio}
🌙
Hosting art parties, celebrating my friends submissions, and contributing to the fabric of the local arts scene - this is what living the artist life looks like, and I am so incredibly grateful for all of it. Thank you everyone!

A deep, sincere, heartfelt thank you to everyone for the last 14 years!
🎈
It doesn’t escape me that it takes a community to truly make a business succeed. And although I work alone, it’s nights like this that remind me I am not.
❣️
The support I felt on Friday, and the encouragement I feel throughout the year, give me fuel to keep going, year after year. And I never want to stop this work. I’m beyond grateful to have found my artistic calling, and even moreso to make a career out of my craftsmanship—all thanks to people like you!
📕
Extra big thanks to those who took and shared photos with me, especially @paulbeinettiphoto who took many of these wonderful pics. I’m really good at living in the moment, and not so great at remembering to record them, so it’s really meaningful to have these captures of the party!
🎉
I’ll say thank you again, but even saying it countless times doesn’t seem like enough!

This is the girl who decided to turn her love of books into her career. (Oh hi, it’s me)

It was my grandmother who initially pushed me to start, and it’s been my community who’ve kept me in business all these years later. And, so, we celebrate!

It’s been a lot of hard work wearing so many hats, but it’s work I cherish and enjoy. It’s given me so many opportunities to express my love for books and paper in ways young Rachael never could have imagined.

I’d love to show my appreciation to you all; come by the studio on Friday for a hello and a high five!

Every NOTABA member has their own story — why they joined, what they’ve learned, and how being part of the community benefits them. 💫

Meet Rachael Gootnick, owner of @justterrific, book repair specialist, and book artist.. 📚

Just Terrific is turning 14 and you’re invited to celebrate! 🎉
📅 Friday, May 8 | 6–8pm
📍 208 N Goodman St.

Rachel has been a NOTABA member for 3 years and hopes to always be! She joined seeking community and fellow business owners and neighbors that care about this area as much as she does — and that’s exactly what she found. 💛

Over time, those connections have turned into genuine friendships, and the support and encouragement she’s received from fellow members has been, in her own words, invaluable.

Another milestone, another celebration: 14 years of Just Terrific Book Arts! Let’s Party! 🎉

Friday May 8th from 6-8pm I’ll be hosting a crafty celebration in my studio.

Keeping my lil book business afloat has been challenging but satisfying work, and I’d love to share in the accomplishment with the community that makes it all possible.

Just Terrific Book Arts continues on because of the clients, organizations, galleries, libraries, and collectors who give me work I’m still eager to say yes to. This past year has flown by in vibrant color, and I am full of gratitude for the opportunities, projects, and collaborations that have come across my desk, filling my calendar and engaging my creativity. I surely wouldn’t have a healthy work/life balance if it wasn’t for my friends and family who show love and support in my personal life too. Thank YOU everyone!

📘There’ll be DIY projects set up to keep your hands happy

📔I’ll have some light snacks and some kind of celebratory sweet treat

📘Miniature book jewelry and tiny giftables will be available, just in time for Ma’s Day or Graduation

📔View the new art I’ve been creating for my solo exhibition in the fall

📘And as always, I’ll be accepting donations of children’s books for distribution to our local Little Free Libraries

May 8th, 6-8pm, at 208 N. Goodman St inside School 31 Lofts at the historic Alexander Hamilton School. Free street parking is available along Goodman St., or across the street at the MAG.

RSVP’s are appreciated (for an accurate cookie count, of course) with the link in my profile

Join me for an upcoming seminar, “Caring for Your Home Library” at @roccity_library on Thursday April 23rd from 5-6:30pm 📚

I’ll discuss accessible practices you can implement at home—whether you have one shelf or a robust personal library—with topics like cleaning and maintenance, remedial methods for damage, and organizing and archiving. This event is a great example of the diversity of resources the library provides for our community, while bringing awareness to the small efforts we can take in prolonging the life of our own personal book collections.

It’s 6x6 time at @roco137! I just can’t get enough!

I hosted an art making party this weekend; we had a blast and made a plethora of pieces to submit. I’d encourage you to create something…anything…whatever you wish! It just has to be 6x6 inches and can’t have any glitter.

It’s such a fun and accessible show—anyone can participate! It’s a total thrill to walk into the gallery to see thousands upon thousands of original artworks. It’s like a scavenger hunt finding yours on the wall! The work is displayed anonymously and sold for $20 each. It brings the community together in the best ways, both in the creation of the art, and during the exhibition. It’s also the largest annual fundraising event for @roco137. Entries are due in-person April 4th, or postmarked by April 7th.

I will share my submissions right before the June 5th opening. And mark your calendars for my next studio party, Friday May 8th!

Calder’s Circus at the Whitney, wow! 🤩
It exceeded my already high expectations.

His larger sculptures have always been a source of inspiration for me. I’m eager to see how this experience infuses itself into my creativity.

If this brings a smile to your face like it does mine, there’s a link in my profile to watch a version of Calder’s Circus performance.

Quiet online, means busy in real life! Some recent repairs and reflections to share ➡️
•
Lately my hands have worked on some interesting titles, my feet traveled to some beautiful places, and my mind has been swirling with inspiration while I create new art for my solo show this fall.
•
I find I feel most at peace and content when I keep my hands busy and focus on these things. I’ve been reading recreationally, attempting winter sports, and booking more trips. I got my heart broken again, and my friends lifted me up before I got to a dark place. Late night craft nights, jigsaw puzzles, and baking bread bring simple bits of joy. I’ve been managing my news intake with small daily doses. Connection and community have been happening offline. Gratitude reigns supreme.
•
The months keep on passing, and life keeps on happening. So for now, I’ll keep creating artwork that aligns with my truths and challenges my vulnerability. I’ll keep my feet walking miles on new lands while keeping my eyes open to the vibrancy of our world. And I’ll continue working diligently on keepsake books and heirloom Bibles, with my head down and my heart open. 💌 by @justterrific

What a holly jolly crafternoon! Thank you to everyone who came by the studio for the holiday open house this weekend; it was wonderful to fill my space with the warmth and joy of so many!

Everyone used their creativity in unique ways, mini books found new homes (one is now filled with poems), cookies were consumed, and warm hugs were shared.

These parties are another reminder to me that art brings people together—and that sitting around a table with crafts is an excellent method of unwinding, especially during the hectic holiday season. I’m feeling grateful for the connections that I’ve made over the years, and for the opportunities to keep growing this amazing community of loved ones and supporters.

Thank you for coming, and happy holidays, everyone! ☃️ taken in Neighborhood of the Arts by @justterrific

I’ve got new work up at @roco137! Sola Simul, meaning alone together, reflects both the importance of solitude and community.

Much of my new work features gulls. I’m aware they may seem like unusual subject matter. These sea-loving birds are often disregarded as ‘trash birds’, however, I find them to be quite graceful, sweet, and important to the diversity of their environment. Gulls are independent, yet strive for the greater good of their flock. They’re not greedy or selfish, like we may think initially, rather they are quite resourceful and dedicated to nurturing their weaker family members. They care for themselves, so that they’re able to care for their community.

Sola simul, alone together. We cannot be strong together, without being strong alone. We cannot have one without the other; stable ground is only found when both dualities hold care for each.

“Sola Simul I” is now on display at RoCo through February 14th as part of the 35th annual Members Show; a metaphorical example of sola simul, and how being a member of this arts organization has strengthened me into a better artist.

“Sola Simul I”, 2025, 8x10x2.5inches, mixed media. Available for purchase through Rochester Contemporary Art Center.

{want to see more works in progress? I’m having a studio open house on Saturday 12/13 from 1-4pm, at 208 N. Goodman St., RSVP link in profile.} taken in Rochester Contemporary Art Center by @justterrific
