I carried a whole speech in my heart, but when the moment came, my heart refused to hand it over to my voice.
So here is the toast that never made it past my heart that night. Your engagement night.

I’ve learned that when you choose your person, you’re never really choosing just one person. You’re also choosing who will sit at the table with your family, celebrate the wins, carry the hard days, and slowly become woven into the lives of the people you love.

I first understood that through my mother.
My mom is one of three sisters, and growing up, their husbands were simply my uncles. Years ago, while I was getting ready to travel, I noticed my mom seemed unusually worried. I asked it was about me traveling and she said:
“Pero yo no te dije que tu tío está enfermo?”
And suddenly I understood.
Yes, she was worried for her sister. Yes, she was worried for her nieces and nephew. But she was also worried about him.
After all those years, he wasn’t simply her sister’s husband anymore. In my moms words, “El es como mi hermano” 🥺
That realization stayed with me. And I quietly hoped that if I ever had daughters, they would have that too. That the man one of them chose wouldn’t remain “my sister’s husband,” but would someday simply become their brother.

Julian, watching you with my girls feels like watching that quiet wish come true. Of course I love you for the way you love Desi. Thank you. Also I love you for the way you love her sisters. You’ve built your own relationship with each of them. You’re kind, you don’t hold grudges, and somehow you stay completely out of the sister madness. Slowly and naturally, you became their brother.

And Desi, watching your future sister in laws love you and bring you in as their own sister has been equally beautiful. And watching you as a Titi, love Lian with your whole heart is so precious.

When you choose well, we get to love the beautiful person you chose too, separately, genuinely, and as our own.

Your happiness becomes my happiness. Your growth matters to me. Your peace matters to me. I love you so much.

He asked for our blessing to join our family, and she said yes to joining his.

There isn't a day that goes by where I don't think of you. 9 years, I still feel your absence keenly, but your presence surrounds me in ways I cannot ignore. The birds sing louder on certain days, and I can't help but believe it's your way of reaching out to me, letting me know you're still here, watching over us like the angel you've always been.

I carry you in my heart every single day. With each milestone I reach, with every accomplishment my daughters achieve, I wish more than anything that you were here to witness it all. You would be so proud, Mami. You always believed in us, and your love continues to inspire and guide me through life's journey.

It hurts that I can't show you our glow-up in person, to share with you the joy of a beautiful, healthy relationship and the happiness of seeing my girls thrive. But I know that wherever you are, you're watching over us with love and pride.

To love someone long-term is to attend a thousand funerals of the people they used to be. The people they're too exhausted to be any longer. The people they grew out of, the people they never ended up growing into. We so badly want the people we love to get their spark back when it burns out, to become speedily found when they are lost.
But it is not our job to hold anyone accountable to the people they used to be. It is our job to travel with them between each version and to honor what emerges along the way. Happy 21st Birthday Desi! 🎉

To my beautiful gifted daughter, I wonder if you know how incredibly proud I am just to be your mom, to be in your presence, to be blessed enough to experience this journey with you.

From being the first in our family to venture off to college to graduating early, you’ve shown such determination and grit. Your intelligence, kindness, and authentic personality make you the amazing person you are, and your strong opinions remind me so much of myself. I love all your stories and love how you make us all laugh. I love how much you care about your family, your sisters, but most of all, how much you care about yourself. You are so important and don’t ever forget that!!

I honestly can’t believe how quickly 10 years has flown by. You have made every single day so much better just by your presence.
