The roads we walked and the stories we lived are like leaves on a tree. Even when they wither and fall, they return in another way—year by year—nurturing the trunk and becoming the memory rings of time.

Seven years have passed, yet this city seems almost unchanged. The escalators at Piccadilly station are still broken, the old Piccadilly Point student halls still stand, and Selfridges’ LG floor still sells perfumes and beauty products. But some things are different: Urban Outfitters on Market Street has become Uniqlo, new apartments rise from the ground, and even the Chinese restaurants wear a new face. In the end, I found myself back at a familiar Sichuan place.

Friends I once met during university days have all returned home, and those I dated back then have long faded into silence. I used to dream of Manchester—wandering the corners of Northern Quarter in my sleep.
